NMLRA membership increase

I left an e-mail for Mr. Coleman today; if it's a false rumor it needs to be stopped before too many get upset.

Declining membership in ML sports is having an impact on all ML clubs, including the NMLRA. The average age is high, and I think that ML shooters can be amongst the thriftiest and less likely to want to part with their brass then other shooting sports.

I had heard that the board passed the rate increase but reversed their decision after the meeting due to the fallout.

If the NMLRA needs the money to operate it is not good either way.

Lets face it, a $50 a year dues increase is not alot. As a percentage it is, but not in real dollars. Hard to take the kitchen boss out for dinner and spend less than $50.

This is the kind of rationalization that makes little sense to me. Sure $50 isn’t a lot in and of itself. But add that to everything else that is costing us more and more ( name something that isn’t). It’s “Death is a Thousand Cuts”, and frankly at this point it’s time, to start saying no.

Not to be argumentative......I made more money this year than I did last year and significantly more than I did 20 years ago. My pickup cost me thousands more this year than the prior one. You can't expect any organization to survive without keeping pace with inflation.

Shooting ML and belonging to the NMLRA cost me quite a bit less than if I belonged to my local country club and played golf.

An increase to 50 or 60 dollars is reasonable. Camp site fees should also be looked at as electricity usage. Any projects need to be put out for bid. The officers and board need to be held accountable. The next step should be knock off the nepotism.

This is the first I've heard this. I've been a member for over 30 years and a life member for 3 years now, so an increase won't affect me, but I can see where some may not renew if this is true because everything else is going up too. I became one of the 1 of 1000 members this past spring to try and keep the sport going for future generations and keep the memory of that era alive since I have loved muzzle loaders since Fess Parker started as Daniel Boone in 1964. Of course I was in the first grade then and when I went out into the woods to play my "flintlock" was a stick, but it instilled in me a love for that period and flintlocks which has stayed with me. I hope this continues for our future generations.

Has anyone else heard NMLRA dues are going up to $90.00 a year?

Hard to believe as they just recently had a membership special of 3 years for $100 that included a hard copy of Muzzle Blasts each month. Difficult enough to grow membership without them raising dues to a staggering $90/yr as you say. To do so would risk a serious exit for many members, especially those who don't live close to Friendship and are unable to use the range and take part in the activities there.

Still a member but after they dropped out of helping the Winter Nationals at Ben Avery here in Phoenix. I don't know. If that increase is true, I'm Nover getting to go to their camp in Indiana, so I might just drop out. Bad for the industry

BTW, I think they have a digital subscription, maybe that is a option

I’m a life member and have been for many years. Mostly to avoid the increasing expense of annual memberships.
But more to support the organization and the sport. I also became a 1 of 1000 member a few years ago for the same reason. I owe something to future generations. Organizations such as NMLRA need to survive for the future.
That does not mean they should not be reorganized. Perhaps it is time. Can it be? Unknown
I have many memories at Friendship for 70+ years.

We do not know when it is effective. Could be 12/31 or with the nmlra year end which is?

I shot USPSA pistol for years. My local club didn’t require a national membership. Last year I purchased the three year membership to keep my muzzleloader club numbers up. Even at $75 a year is a lot just to hold a plastic card knowing I won’t attend at Friendship.

I understand that costs have gone up, but they have also gone up for us, when SS gets 2.2% and others raise their prices by 10-20% I have to question whether I can continue to support them, especially when they stopped supporting anything outside of Indiana

I would rather see them ding us a bit each year rather that a 50% bump in one year. Costs go up every year. Bump it say $10 a year or what ever is justified.

The increase goes into effect on October 1st. I sent an email to Mr. Coleman about the increase. It may not help, but if he doesn't hear from the membership, he will figure it is ok. Let him know how you feel about this. His email is: [email protected].

I heard the board voted on it last night. At that price I know a dozen people that won't renew. Also heard the number of vendors was down from the spring shoot. Half of the vendors stalles were closed at the spring shoot.

From the Glory days of NMLRA & huge activity at Freind Ship shoots in the late 70s early 80s It seems a great shame.to we older shooters who knew those days Also by the very nature of passing times find the 'Sticker shock 'of so much now that seems so much dearer. like all the Goex you wanted at 5$ a tin .So the Membership then & now probably correlated to the same in terms of what a $ then Versus what the same item now costs .I' me sure there not trying to price the association out of reach. probably just a fiscal reality they have to face. I was a member for years until the wretched in lines came along plus Ime half a World away from any events . The same is true of my long membership of the UK MLAGB I was member number 103 & founder Member of its Sheffield branch( last surviver actually ).& I wrote a great many articles for the Magazine ' Black Powder' So many I was listed as a 'Branch ' a one man ' Branch' but Copy Is Copy ! . Any Editor will tell you that !. The leading lights of its leaders are just as dedicated its more down to changing times & costing beyound their control .

Thrifty ? Ime so thrifty I make Scrooge look like a spend thrift . But you are right we do tend to be cautious with our money .
