No more GOEX or OE

Put one of your black powder weapons in the hands of a friend with disposable income, then you'll have a person you know that fires black powder weapons when he can't resist the temptation to get one of his own. 😅
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work for me. My friends and coworkers go out with me, have a blast shooting my guns, then go on with their lives instead of getting their own.

add: Ex-coworkers... I officially retired this month.

True, well now thinking back its probably true for me as well. I've had I think 6-7 people say that they want a BP firearm after letting them try one, but none have bought one so far. Every time they go out they say they want to get one but never do.
 
Congratulations on your retirement, @troy2000 ! Within a few weeks, you'll wonder how you ever found time to work. Maybe sooner.

Like @TrapperDude , I live in Florida. There have been reports of various dealers around and about selling black powder at around $30 per pound. Prices online are attractive, but then you add in shipping and HazMat, and you're back up to the $30 per pound mark. You can save a dollar or two per pound buying in a larger quantity, but I never needed or had storage space for that much. I went in with a couple of guys on a group order a few weeks ago, and bought my first two pounds of Olde Eynsford. The OE costs more per pound than the regular GOEX, but after all was said and done, it cost me $31.40 per pound. The last order I bought on my own was five or six pounds of GOEX from Graf & Son, and it wasn't really any cheaper, mainly because I paid all of the HazMat and shipping myself.

Really, the only way to save a little on this is to get a group of people and place a big bulk order, 25 pounds or more.

Meanwhile, around thirty bucks is what we expect to spend, in my neck of the woods.

I sure wouldnt want to get caught selling it at a gunshow without the Explosives Dealers License required. Thats why you dont see it on dealers tables.
Back in the early 1990s I used to be able to buy a pound of Goex for $7 at any gunshop here in Washington State. By the late 1990s it went up to $16 and harder to find. Gunshops that stopped selling black powder said that the regulations made it difficult or impossible for them to have it for sale. I realized back then that the Clinton Administration was using regulatory powers to advance their anti-gun agenda.

Everything you just said about HAZMAT fees and shipping makes sense. I figured that those fees would combine with the base price of an online order to make it come out as a wash when compared to buying local. It's also part of why I didn't feel any resentment over paying that price at the store. I'm glad you clarified those factors for the group.

Good point. I only bought Pyrodex before I ever got my flintlock, so the intricacies of black powder sales vs. Pyrodex sales have been unknown to me. I'm learning something new every day, now that I've gotten into that aspect of the hobby.
 
I'm fortunate that I bought a case with some buddies this spring and have 5 pounds of OE and a pound of Goex to add to whatever I had on hand (probably 3 or 4 pounds of assorted Goex). That will last me for at least a few years, but this is sad news.

I “rent” them my guns for $1200 and they don’t have to give them back
