Choosing a brand of powder

Fortunately GOEX is back...unless someone is doing Olympic-type shooting, I don't think any normal human can detect any difference, all things being equal; although I know there are some here who will claim otherwise!

I know for a fact that I can shoot more times between having to run a patch down the bore of my .32 Crockett squirrel rifle when using Swiss when compared to the old GOEX. I have not tried the new GOEX.

I find no difference in accuracy between the two.

the worst powder ever was dragon I couldn't get anything (back before I learned to buy in bulk) so I bought a couple of pounds It was like $5 a pound what a joke the balls just bounced off the backer board at 25 yards LOL but it works pretty good in my son's Winchester cannon that shoots 10 ga black powder blank loads

Still shooting w/Graf's from around 2002. No problems , just learned how to manage any fouling to maintain accuracy. Ten yrs ago , got a bunch of old metal can Dupoint FFg , and FFFg , and it is still very reliable. Keep it sealed , and just use it.

I have unopened cans of Golden and Elephant. It was on sale on the close out table at Cabellas when the chain went out of business 6 or so years ago. Bought it as a curiosity.

I have used Goex for 45 years. No reason to change at this point. I have a case shipped from Coonies when I get down to 20-25 pounds on hand for the last 25+ years. Works for me.

Considering I have no choice but to order powder online, I figure I might as well get a lot at one time. I much prefer standardization. I also prefer Swiss due to it has proven to burn cleaner for me. Thus, I stick with Swiss for all my muzzleloaders. I cannot attest to Swiss actually being any more accurate out of my ML's, but it certainly is a little hotter and cleaner burning.

I’ve noticed that since I ran out of my legacy Goex and switched to Swiss, I get a LOT more powder in my frizzen pan if I have it closed when loading.

My only conclusion there is that Swiss 3f is certainly a somewhat finer grind than Goex 3f. That would explain it being a hotter and cleaner burn.

Elephant was the only powder that I had any trouble with, and I gave away almost all of it that I won at a shoot. Swiss is definitely the best but for me any of the brand (kik. goex, schuetzen ) work better than I can shoot

Way things are going, best get powder when you can at the price level you can afford. Old guys have cans with $2.90 on the (I do) and the 4F Dupont's still good from the 1960's. Considering $2.00 an hour was average pay, $23 or so for powder's not crazy bad. I try to keep a year's supply of stuff on hand, but that got iffy during the panicdemic. Buy & hoard. Worked for me.
