Well, it had to happen, the idiots in the state capital (NY) banned the use of lead projectiles for hunting! Just great! There are alternatives for centerfire rifle and pistol cartridges, but what do I do with my .54 Renegade? Cast zinc balls? Idiots!

One of the sporting community’s primary concerns was a bill that would have prohibited the use of lead ammunition on wildlife management areas, state forests, forest preserves, state parks or any other state-owned land that is open for hunting, and on land contributing surface water to the New York city water supply.

Assembly Bill A5728

2021-2022 Legislative Session
Prohibits the use of lead ammunition in the taking of wildlife on state-owned land and on land contributing surface water to the New York city water supply

The Assembly bill — A05728 — was brought to the floor and passed by a vote of 98 to 49. However, the companion Senate Bill — S05058 — failed to make it to the floor for a vote. The backdrop to the activity in the Legislature was a report of the New York State Lead Ammunition Working Group dated April 2022, commissioned by the Department of Environmental Conservation, titled “Minimizing Risks to Wildlife and People From Lead Hunting Ammunition.”

Bill for banning lead, SO5058, DID NOT PASS

You are lucky it did not pass. They will continue to try. There are NO good substitutes for lead in a ML round ball rifle. There is also NO evidence to support banning lead as a hunting projectile. I know first hand that the data used to support the California ban was fabricated by a activist from UC Santa Cruz.

Could you please point to the regulation change where the ‘idiots’ banned the use of lead projectiles in New York? Although I live in North Carolina I still have hunting property in NY and pay attention to rule changes. The only thing I am aware of was NY did was create ‘Lead Ammunition Working Group’ that has recommended looking for ways to minimize lead projectiles while hunting. No laws have actually been passed by the legislature.

Have you read the groups report? Only ‘idiots’ jump to conclusions and spread rumors without knowing or investigating the facts. Good luck using your cast zinc balls.

Edit: I was typing and did not see the @Archer 756 post before posting my reply.

The linked report is enlightening. The report is a hatchet job that seeks to give false "evidence" for an agenda. For instance, eating game killed with lead bullets is unsafe. The idea presupposes that hunters eat blood shot meat damaged by ultra hihg velocity bullets. Or, that swallowing birdshot will make you sick. A hunter knows the idea is silly. An activist with an agenda will put it out there to trick politicians into passing unfounded legislation.

Anyway, sorry to the NY hunters. It will not be long, I watched it happen in California, from the inside. They are operating with the same playbook. They will ban lead projectiles. They hate hunters and gun people and will take any opportunity to attack you.

When it comes to pass, try bismuth. Close to the same density of lead. A little bit harder than lead. Melts easily with home casting equipment. Can be more tiresome to cast but.... it is available at RotoMetals and will keep you in the game. And bismuth (95% bismuth, 5% tin) passes any and all non-toxic regs in all 50 states. I use bismuth for all my waterfowl hunting. Kills just like lead used to decades ago. Expensive, but great stuff. I understand you are likely taking about roundballs, not shot. Bismuth will cast a roundball in a mold just like lead. It's great problem is that it expands as it cools.

I heard that Biden is considering banning lead projectiles on federal wildlife management areas, and federal lands. Don't know where this sits right now but I hope that more scientific minds will prevail.

You don't want lead getting in to the NYC water supply, there is already enough brain damage in NYC!!!🤣

We have all read something written either intentionally or otherwise to mislead us ..and in a hurry I've been guilty of reading just the bullet points
But I expect my fellow forum members to be civil to me and others when you choose to gently correct my incorrect assumptions

I should think a cheerfull "Hey we got lucky ..the Senate failed it"
would be quiet enough course correction for ALL to learn from

Don't fret, NY (and other areas) may eventually be underwater due to global warming raising the sea levels.
According to authentic scientists(ones not paid by government or Universities to lie) have proven: poles have switched more than 450 times throughout creation. Poles have melted many, many times, and other areas that were cold became tropical many, many times. And there were no trains, plains, and automobiles!! Carbon credits will make billionaires richer and taxes imposed for carbon will make us poorer!!
It's called weather and even the scientific meteorologists can't perdict the weather from one week to the next, yet they are going to tell us what the weather and climate will be 100 years from now! Lies because they know most of us today won't be around to prove they lied!
Sorry, about the speech....still hope you are right.

Bismuth is very, very expensive. Lead is cheap
