that's called a vinegaroon stain. It's very similar to Aqua Fortis....but different.
 
Wash the oil out of the steel wool first with a solvent.
 
No. Aqua fortis is ferric nitrate, from dissolving iron in nitric acid. Vinegar is acetic acid, and will not make ferric nitrate.
Ferric nitrate reacts to the tannins in the wood, causing the change in color.
You can avoid all the hassle associated with either product by buying ferric nitrate crystals from. The Science Co., dissolve them in water or alcohol. No muss no fuss.

It's still a spent acid stain. The application is the same as Ferric Nitrate or AF. Apply and heat.
Some have had good results with it. The color may not be as vibrant as traditional AF.
As always with homemade stains....test on scrap.
Too, only use iron or steel. Avoid galvanized or strange alloys as they can affect colors.
Do not cap the container until the acid, vinegar is spent.
