I don't know what process you went through to choose a builder but if it were me I would choose a known reputable builder that I have had a chance to personally see their work. I am fortunate to have a builder as a member of our club that does great work and am able to see his work often.

I knew folks would ask for a name. I'm torn on this issue. I'm trying to have a proffesional and adult attitude about this and not go screaming this man's name all over the internet. However it may come to that. Please ladies and gents BE CAREFULL WHO YOU SEND MONEY TO!! I'm upset about this enough that I'm actually considering taking a break from muzzleloading, and possibly never taking it up again. I spent money that has been hard for me to get my hands on for what I thought would be exactly what I wanted and needed and this poor excuse for a gun builder has ruined that thought. At this point I trust no one. Sadly that also includes the local gun builder who is in possesion of the rifle now.

A lot of us have been there.
Naming the builder can be valuable information. Just stick with the facts and let us know who this is. I had a long running thread about my experience with a builder for my fowler. Not flattering to him but it was all the truth.

Jim I think it is a bad start to the thing.
IMHO It would have been better to just post photos and the builder's name without comment.

:surrender: Not saying I could have done that, had I been in your shoes :nono: I would likely have done just as you did.

That said: and :eek:ff

Hay Jim,
I hear you have a new custom rifle.... How about some photos of it......oh and BTW who was the builder who put his name on the work we will see pic of???

Post script: Jim your line is ....Why yes Sean, I did just receive my new firearm made for me by ____________, here are some photos pray tell what you think.

I should of been a cop

Yes I did inquire on the forum about builders and his name came up. A couple of folks said they liked his work and his price was what I could afford so I went with him. I have no way to post pictures so it would be my word against his if I listed the litanny of mistakes/crude workmanship and named the builder. He knows what he did and I hope he's proud of himself. Hey it takes skill to do a job this poorly. No, I'm not being sarcastic. This is just a plea for folks to be darn carefull and choose wisely the builder for their next muzzleloader. Been stewing about this all morning trying to figure out a way to pay the local guy so the rifle can be rebuilt right. I may have to call him today and tell him to forget it. Can't figure out how to come up with $650 to $800 by June. The rifle is not really useable as is so I guess I'll cut it up and trash it. If I can't get it rebuilt then I don't want it around to remind me. I'm just sick over this.

Assuming you have contacted him with your concerns....what is his excuse/response??

If he is known and listed here even more important to reveal so others can be more informed. You say "be careful" but apparently you did some homework and were "taken". Perhaps naming him could keep others from experiencing what your now going through... and maybe nudge him towards making it right? If he cares to continue I would think he would simply take it back and could resell it if he is able? (and at least recoup his costs?)

Yes I sent him a polite but obviously angry e-mail and I've yet to hear from him. He told me he prefers e-mail that's why I went with that route of communication. The rifle is not useable without repairs/modifications so he'd have to fix it to re-sell it if he chose to refund my money and take the rifle back but somehow I don't see that happening.

This is why I build my own. Sure, I end up with a kinda crappie looking menage of parts and wood and metal but they are all my screw ups to live with.

Not shootable? :shocked2: at all? Please list some of the more major defects.

I reputable builder releasing an unshootable custom speaks to some illness or social issue in his life :( (physical/mental/martial??). Lets hope he soon responds, you don't deserve to be kept waiting and by no means to pay another to correct mistakes!

So far this post is avoiding the issue....no pics of this gun w/ all it's purported flaws and no name of the builder. Why even talk about this?.....Fred

I mean why in the world would you send out a rifle to a customer that has a long crack in the buttstock that runs from the buttplate almost to the wrist? The full stock is not connected to the barrel properly. He either did not install the most foreward underlug on the barrel or missed it when he drilled the hole for the pin. The barrel easily moves in the stock. The hammer does not contact the nipple correctly. If I could post pics it would be self explanitory as to why. The local builder is trying to convince me to let him rebuild it as a flinter because the only 'easy' fix is to anneal and bend the hammer to the correct position (he also does not like 'cap guns). It took him three trys to drill the hole for the trigger guard pin correctly. Made no real attempt to 'cover up' that mess. Looks like he either never scraped or sanded the stock before staining/finish. The finish looks like it was put on with dirty lint filled sock. The finish turned white in the ramrod channel. Suffice to say the ramrod is unuseable. Chunks of wood missing from the rod and the pinning job for the ramrod end is and absolute joke. For some reason the front sight looks like someone took a center punch and punched several dozen divots in the side of it. the trigger guard, buttplate, etc, etc are in 'as cast' condition. Yes they were browned but no attempt was made to clean them up prior to browning. Looks like the t. gaurd was broken during assembly and was poorly welded back together. Nose cap is loose as a goose. All of the metal furniture sits proud of the wood. Lock should sit flush in the inlet. Nope, it sits proud of the wood surrounding it. Rifle looks like the wood shrunk 10% after the metal was fitted. So it's not a matter of stripping off the finish and starting over. I honestly have never seen such a poorly built firearm of ANY kind. Period, EVER.

For those of you doubting me, why the heck would I make this up? What the heck do I have to gain by doing so. If he does not respond to me by the end of the week, or his responce is not helpfull in resolving this, I will post the builder name. If any of you live near Fairmount in Vermilion County Illinois please feel free to contact me to look at the rifle yourself.

Well I see someone figured it out and merged threads. Well it's out in the open now. Builders name is Mike Lange.

I won't give his name but you guys won't accidently find him. I have known him for many years and blackpowder is far from his thing.

He IS a professionaly trained gunsmith -- he even served an apprenticeship of sorts. He seems to have become odd as he has aged though. Beligerant, like the proverbial "old man," and hyperactive. I will say this though...

At the same time he was not making me happy (to the point where I wouldn't let him apply the finishes to my own kit gun (after we Aqua Fortised it), paid him too-much in full, and took it back) he had finished making from scratch someone's rare wood forearm and rear stock, including hand-made screws and checkering and patterns and it was so nice, so perfect, so fine and beautiful I suggested he enter it in a show somewhere. 'course it was $2,500 and that did NOT include the materials...

You went a long ways to NOT release his name until he has had a chance to repsond direct to you. That to me is the right way to handle disputes.

This is the very first time I have ever read of a complaint with Mikle Lange's work, and I have no dog in this race, I don't know the man, never met him.

I know what happens when the internet gets on your case so I really hope this is not a case of a good man getting tarred and feathered for no good reason. The description of the gun you had delivered is a LONG, LONG ways from anything I have ever heard about Mike's work.

I would really like to see clear detailed pictures of this. If you can't figure out how to load them pm. me, I will give you my email. You can email them to me and I will load them to this topic string for you.

While I don't have a lot of experience with custom builds, I must say, I'm glad I got my rifle built by a fine gentleman the first time around! In fact, he will be building my next rifle also.

Sorry to hear your hard earned money was not spent to your satisfaction. Being a very poor man, I know how hard it is to come by in this economy! Hopefully the builder will come through to correct the issues with you. Don't give up on black powder due to one poorly built rifle. The sport alone is not to blame.
