Never thought about tea bags- is there much residue left in the chambers? On making the mandrel/form- I stuck a wood dowell in the chuck of a hand held electric drill and using some sand paper- I put a taper on the end of the dowel. I then scribed a line on the dowel to line up the cigarette paper. I have a cardboard "template" to trace on the cigarette paper to cut it out to size. I set it up so the gummed part of the cigarette paper is on top and INSIDE. Stick the bullet into the paper case and lick the paper- the moisture goes through and activates the glue- sticking the case to the conical.
I must be the luckiest guy in the world on the use of these cartridges. I have, at times, used newsprint, which is 3x the thickness of cigarette paper and I still had near 100% ignition. I don't understand why so many people need to pierce the back of the cartridges. I "crunch" down the load pretty good- maybe I am rupturing the cases as I load. Maybe the taper of the case is such that it ruptures as it is loaded. I do use aftermarket nipples- "spit-fire" or something like that- maybe they let more force pass through the nipples. I wonder what the opening was on the original nipples? I have had a few duds but I've attributed it to a badly fouled chamber that I didn't clean up enough. On a clean chamber I have never had any troubles, like I said, maybe I've just been lucky.

The number of misfires can be affected by the make of cap you use. I have almost 100% reliability with Remington #10s but have less luck with CCI, using the same cartridge construction.

I use a glue stick to stick the paper to the ball and to glue the cartridge bottom.

Once I have a batch of 50 or so done, I melt beeswax in a double boiler, and then dip the ball end of the cartridge into the molten wax, up to the equator and just covering the top of the paper. This joins the paper to the ball more firmly, and provides a lube.

That Beeswax sounds like a good idea and is actually the pc way they did it as I understand.

Even with "real" powder, you may have trouble with hangfires, depending upon the caps you are using. I found that CCI caps were not as reliable as the Remingtons. This fact and reading that I've done has convinced me that the Remingtons are hotter than the CCI.

I agree 100% all I buy now are Remington percussion caps which is what I was using when I got the hang fires with the traditionally loaded cylinder (no paper cartridge)
Plus the Remington percussion caps seem to fit the nipples better.

I will give them a try if I can find them, but not for some time because on 01/12/2013 my house burned down and the Confederate Navy brass frame revolver in my logo photo had it's frame melt and I lost all of my potassium nitrate and nitrated paper as well as all the paper cartridges I had made up along with all but 2 firearms.
I still have the revolver I posted about in the "What make of pistol" forum.

Oh man, my heart goes out to you. That's always been one of the biggest fears I've had. You must be devastated.

I sincerely hope you can get everything sorted out and your life back on track as painlessly and as quickly as possible.

Thanks Marc
While it has been a struggle I am not the sort to give up, so I am recovering thanks in a big part to the rural community.
I have acquired a 1860 I don't know who made it with a moose hide holster made by the same friend who made the elk holster I had before the fire, and a new 1858 Pietta that makes a set of 3.
So I changed my logo to fit.
At some point I will get back into making pager cartridges seeing as with the advice I got here the last ones I made worked very well and left no paper residue in the pistol.
Thanks again
