How about just plain Ballistol for a patch lube and for cleaning? Or should it be diluted with water for a patch lube?

There's no real reason to use Ballistol for cleaning unless you have lead deposits, like in a revolver. Soapy water will pretty much do everything Ballistol will for cleaning. I'm a diehard Ballistol user and I stopped cleaning my muzzleloaders with it and only use it on the revolvers and only after a thorough flushing with soapy water.

As for patch lube, a little Ballistol goes a long way. I think using it straight is a bit much. If you mix it with water, then wet your patches and let them lay out till they dry out, it leaves just the right amount of Ballistol behind. I find that my guns like a mix of 5-7 parts water to 1 part Ballistol. Each gun seems to prefer a particular mix, but in a pinch, 5 to 1 seems to work well enough in all of them.

It hasn't hurt my cast iron skillets yet, so I doubt a steel barrel would be in any danger from Crisco....
