Hello, I have just purchased a new Pedersoli Frontier rifle in 50 cal. My problem is the .49 ball and patch will not fit at the front of the barrel. My Lyman 50 cal takes the same ball and patch with no problem. Do I need to return the rifle? Is it possible the barrel is flawed? I don't think I should have to beat the ball and patch into the barrel.

Yes, it's a 50 cal rifle. I've been looking on Gun Broker and .48 dia balls are for sale there, I'll buy a box and maybe that will fix the problem.

My .50 cal. Pedersoli Hawken uses a .495 dia. ball with a .006 thk. patch or a .490 Dia. ball with a .010 thk. patch. It's favorite load, so far, is a .490 Dia. ball with the .010 patch, 75 gr. FFFG Schutzen (sp?) black powder. Shoots an acceptable group at 60 yards. Good luck.

The tolerance range for the dimension for muzzle loading rifle's bore diameters is quite large. @sleepyhunter, that's why we stress that every rifle should be recognized for their differences. There's probably nothing wrong with your new Pedersoli rifle.

I believe that each of us should have a digital Vernier calipers. One reason is to measure land to land bore diameter and groove to groove diameter. Second reason is to measure ball size. Third is to measure patch thickness.
