Slamfire I think we all are at one time or another when it comes to this stuff. Ive got a friend well did years ago, that got shot with a Blackhack 44mag at around 7' to 10' 1 of the 2 or 3 shoots went right thru his heart (he's maybe 6'5" 275 lbs) I and everyone else knew he was going to die, and 8 days later he walked out of the hospital :shocked2: as the DRs put it. he was shot so close none of the energy stayed in him because he was so close. Go figure  Fred :hatsoff:

That is what happen when you are only using a 'varmint' caliber........now if ole big Jim were shot with a 20ga. slug, or bigger, wonder what would have happened? :hmm:

I dont think anything could go far with a 20/62 thru it, and Im reminded of a Denver policeman (?) many years back killed wearing a vest killed by a 22cal that hit his heart but didnt go thru the vest, just the shock of the 22 did it. :shake: And last night going thru old Muz Blast about the longest shot in the Rev War, we took out a Redcoat at 600 yds, in the same war 3 of our guys got nailed by one shot from a big bore sniper rifle from the other side from over 100 yds, Now thats penetration! Fred :hatsoff:

What i'd like to know is how in the Rev War Yanks could kill a horse at 400 yards shooting at the rider if kill range now days is 100 yds or closer? I always belived the rifles from then are small bore, 30 to 40 cal , it takes a lot to drop a horse at that range. Talk about penetration

I think you'll find very few rifles from the Revolution and before were less than .45, while most were in the .50s and some in the low .60s. The really small bores became the norm after large game and hostilities were no longer considerations.

Thanks for that input its something none of my reading has come up with, good idea. Fred

Sounds like the doctors are just as confused about terminal ballistics as us.
