Hi,

I have this double barrel percussion shotgun that doesn't appear to have any manufacturer's markings. Shotgun is just over 38 inches long and the barrel is just over 22 inches long. Top of barrels are marked "joh franz ammann in ermatingen" Which I take to read Joh Franz Ammann from Ermatigen Switzerland. Anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks,
Phil

Can't say I've ever heard of Johann Franz Ammann or seen any of his work before, but I'd recommend you check the bottom of the barrels and the back of the lock plates for clues or marks. The gun needs a little research and TLC.

It appears to have been originally flint and I would be willing to bet that the barrels would have been somewhere in the 35"-38" range of length. The style of stock, barrels, triggers and guard. Looks just like the 2 flinters I own from a 1790-1820 period.

Yes, should have noted that myself. The flat topped barrel/rib combo is interesting work and it's too bad it was converted, would be such a pretty flinter.

Thanks for all of the replies. I too thought this was probably a flintlock. I checked underneath the barrels and couldn't find anything. About to check the back of the lock plates...
