Ever since I saw a guy leave the end of his ramrod along with the ball screw in a dry ball when the fitting pulled off the end of the rod, I have pinned the ends of my ramrods to prevent leaving anything behind. I recently got one of the synthetic rods and wonder if it is necessary to do it with this as well?

I would. It's not so much the strength of the ramrod material, it's the strength of the glue that's important. I don't trust glue or threads or anything else when it comes to repeated stress. A pin is cheap insurance.

I got one of the synthetic rods with my GM drop in barrel. Think it's delrin. They are not pinned and the end came off the rod the second time I used it! :shocked2:

I dryballed once and pulling the ball, my RR ferrule popped off (the one outside the barrel) so i pinned that one. Second time i dryballed the other RR ferrule popped off (again it was the one outside the barrel) so, i pinned that one too. i was not happy (its a custom)

I have not dryballed since. but if i do, im ready!

Good advice. I took the time tonight to drill and put pins in both ends. Now I know I won't have a problem -- with that anyway.

I recommend both gluing and pinning. I have had the pins pull through the end of the grain after a number of years of use.

The rod I got with my GM barrel a couple months ago is actually aluminum.

It certainly won't hurt; however I can tell you from experience you may still pull the rod end off :( . Stuck ball CVA plainsman.

I've been lucky so far and haven't had a stuck ball. But from all the stories I hear, I know it is just a matter of time. Maybe a pinned range rods should be supplemented with a CO2 device for blowing out the ball. :hmm:
