POLL: Who Would Buy a .526" or .527" round Ball Mould?

Some .54 caliber rifles and pistols like a ball a little smaller than the usually recommended .530". Lyman used to make a .526" round ball mould, and Lee made one in .527", but these have both been discontinued. Used ones are hard to find.

Out of curiosity, I'd like to know who would want to see either or both of these round ball moulds brought back into production. More specifically, who would buy one?

i had a smoothbore flinter and the 530 went in way too hard. the 526 was perfect..found out that early 70s imported guns had smaller diameters than 530(54cal)

I have one like that; I have to patch it with shirt fabric. Thank goodness there is no rifling to fill.

Any one who felt they had a use for it would buy one. I don't have any 54 calibers so I would have no use for one.

I would have some time ago. Don't know why but it seems more common in 54s to be undersized. I had a difficult time loading my 54 with .530 RBs and a friend of mine also. Both are T/C rifles. I found a .520 RB mould and that works for me.

My first .54 was a Green River rifle works barrel and I shot tge .526. .530 tore patches or used a thin patch that didn’t group well. Those were the days I could clover leaf at fifty yards. I shoot a .530 in my 28 bore now as a prb

I also have the old Lee .527. I used it in my Santa Fe Hawken but found the .520 to be better.

I have a 54 TC Hawken and would probably be quite happy with a smaller diameter ball. Can always patch up.

I did years ago for my GRRW Leman Trade Rifle (1975) got the Dixie mold , cast RBs very well, just use a wirecutter to trim off spur ! ( file pic , mine is a little cleaner)

i shoot 526 in my smoothbore. ball size is not that critical in smoothbores. it's the snugness of the fit with the patch.

Update - I spoke with Carol Ripplinger just now to express our interest and the response I received from Lee Precision. She was surprised by the number of .526 cast balls they are selling as a gauge of customer interest and will discuss the possibility of having molds made with David. Stay tuned.

These guys will make a mold in pretty much any size. I ordered one from them a while back for my Bess. Even though they are in England I received my mold in less than ten days. They use Lee handles. They work great and do not leave much of a protruding sprue. The Tanner family has been making molds for many years.

If you're interested in a custom round ball mold there's a guy in England named Tanner who makes them and pricing even with transatlantic shipping is still decent.

My need for a .520 or.526 is that I have an original rifle in .530. I obtained a mold several years ago and the ball fits just fine and gives nice group. steg49
