just asking if possible to and who has and how they cooked them....cause i'm always seeing them while out small game hunting and bow season....even in flintlock season....always willing to try things out....twice if i like it :hmm:..........bob

Love 'em, cooked on a spit over an open fire basted with maple syrup. Get them out of the hard woods, not pines.

Well, it has been years and years since I cooked one..in fact I cooked two over time...and both times it was...er..interesting. This old story..about a man not starving to death and eating a porky because they are easy to kill...yeah...they are easy.. But that is where it stops. Ya ain't gonna die of starvation..yer gonna die of over exertion of the jaw muscles. I tried cooken them critters twice now..and each time the same thing. Take a chaw offn one in the mornin and yer still chawin the same dang piece of meat at 10 in the evenin. Truth is..I ain't never tasted anythin that dang tough..like chawin rubber. Imo.

When I lived in Wisconsin I killed two of the critters. Before you shoot, realize 2 things: they are the hardest small animal to get out of the woods, and they are the hardest animal to skin you have ever encountered. The quills will defend them even after they are dead!! On the plus side, the quills may fetch you $20 to $40 from crafters.

As for cooking, I use a crock pot for all the weird animals I bring home, like raccoon and possum. Cut the meat into chunks, add your preferred vegies, cover with water, and let it stew all day. When you open the lid, don't be turned off by the fat layer on the top. Just skim it off, dispose of it, and enjoy the meal.

Hi Bob
Up here we used to boil them, no joke. Skin from the bottom. Yea no kidd'en. Then you have to make sure all the fat, and any glands or orgin residue is out of em. The house will stink of rotten pine at first. But after a while the smell goes. The meat should be sort of like ground from the boil'en, Stringy and sort of mushy. Then drain offf the water, YOU add barbeque sauce, garlic, salt. pepper 2 onions and let sit on low heat for a few hours. The mixture actually tastes good. However realize the reason people don't hunt'em is because they are a lost man salvation. These are the only real meat you can kill every time with a stick. :m2c:

Reminds me of the time I had Raccoon. Sure was glad when I had enough of it. Gave the rest to the dog and he spent the rest of the evening lickin' his arse tryin' to get the taste out of his mouth!

I had Seal while I was in Alaska, think I will try that next time to get that flavor out as well... took 3 days to get rid of that smell, taste, and memory OUT...

I can't believe the porcupine is an endangered species in PA.

Thats the way the above link reads to me, perhaps some residents of the commonwelth of PENN can shed some light on this...

Yeah, we had a bunch of treehuggers in Boulder (Sorry, People's Republic of Boulder) try to get the prairie dog listed as endangered! They're thick as fleas on a Georgia hound around here, and a real nuisance. If they're endangered, I know where the's millions of 'em. Come and get 'em.

No, the one's that are endangered are marked with an abbreviation (T= state threatened, E=state endangered). The rest are just marked as being present in the region. The way that page is titled is misleading.

We've been told by the rancher on the property we hunt that if finds out we passed up killing a porcupine we wouldn't be allowed to hunt anymore. I've killed a bunch, but I leave 'em for the coyotes. Don't know how I'd even get 'em back to the truck without getting stuck let alone cook one.
