Was lookin at some of the powder horns on the sight, very nice pieces.I was wandering some of the horns are white, yellow. How do you go about changing the color of these horns?Kind of curious how to make one of these? Can someone point me in a direction?

You know where a fella can find a little literature on how to make one of these horns and on the rit fabric dye?

go to track of the wolf and look under powder horns and you will find some books on building yourself a horn. not real hard just take your time

The RIT dyeing is easy enough. You just toss the horn (after you've finished carving it) into a pot of hot water and RIT dye. Takes about a pack I've found.

The real trick is in deciding exactly which color you want. I find that a mix of orange/yellow is nice as is a mix of brown/black.

Kbeers,
In my opinon, the best book out on horn making is the Sibley's book, and be purchased at the link supplied.
Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn by Scott and Cathy Sibley
Demonstrates every step in recreating an 18th century powder horn. Softcover, 91 pages, 11" X 8-1/2", ISBN 0-9765797-0-7.

Price $19.95

Sibley's Book

Packdog that is the best I have seen and very cheap for the price. I've made my own for some time and learned a lot of new tricks from that book. Good pictures to.
Anybody done a review on the book on pouches.
Fox

I agree with Ken on the Sibley book. It will take you step by step through the process. I use RIT dye on my horns, and it is kinda tricky to anticipate how it will come out. Course that is half the fun in finishing the horns. Another good resourse on powder horns is Jim Dresslar's book "The Engraved Powder Horn". It is pricey, but if you like 18th and 19th century powder horns it is worth the price.

I'll have to check out that book. Thanks for the info fellas! Where might a fella get some of this rit dye ?

Silverfox,
Mike Nesbit did a review on Tim's book. I don't make pouches but the book is great to me and Tim is a very talented pouch maker. His work is outstanding.

Book Review

Most grocery stores carry it. At least the bigger ones do. Walmart always has it.

Same here. All the grocery stores have it on the isle with the laundry soap.

Thanks packdog I just may have to get me that book and learn a few more tricks of the trade.

You mean they are dyed? I have been wasting a lot of time driving around looking for a cow to shoot that has the right color horns.

I have no clue how this is actually spelled or said but i use potassium "permanganate" Maybe (I usually just slur my speech when I say it) Its what fisheries guys use to kill fish to do a count, and thats who I got it from. but there are alot of other uses too a couple of ounces have lasted me years dyeing my bows, and powder horns I just keep some mixed in water and rub a little on. one coat is fine for horns do some experimenting first. Its more of a beige than a yellow though hope this helps

You can also get Potassium Permanganate at Water Softener Suppliers. Some Home Depots, Lowes and Menards stores carry it, but not all!....One bottle will last most a life time!

Thanks fellas!I'll have to look into that! Can't pronounce it but I'll have to look into that.Appreciate the help!
