What do we know about lead?

We sure use it enough in our muzzleloaders, but there is more to lead than just projectiles...

Lead (Pb) is a metal of groups IVA & IVB on the periodic table.
Lead's atomic number is 82 and it's atomic weight is 207.2 with a melting point of 327.4 degrees C.
Lead was known and used by the early Egyptians and Babylonians and throughout Roman times in water pipes.
The principal lead ore is the sulfide, PbS, commonly called GALENA...

Lead is a soft metal having little tensil strength, and is the 3rd. heaviest common metal, except for gold (Au) and mercury (Hg)...

Lead is also a poison and bullets and round balls should be removed from the game ASAP to prevent the poisioning of the meat and yourself once you eat it...(so, get the lead out)
Lead ore contains other heavy metals like copper, antimony, zinc, arsenic, bismuth plus gold and silver...Only by melting the ore and skimming off the "IMPURITIES" do we end up with pure lead.

I just thought you might like to know, and to think, doctors use to give wounded soldiers lead bullets to bite on during an operation...

I am not sure that it was muzzle loading per se, but it was Black Powder
(sort of) and percussion cap primed and fired.
After watching Bottom Dealing Mike shooting his Smith carbine and today is nice... well you get what happened.
There was some APP on the loading bench , it was tried and found wanting. Every thing from a pop-pause- bang to a pop-no bang swear words mostly referring to the carbine as the male child of a female dog.
A small bit of FFg in the case as a primer under the 30 grain VOLUME of APP and the 75 yrd target was hit 4 for 4. Open sights, elbows on the shooting bench not bad for an old (very old) guy.
Now the good part because cleanup was a four patch operation.
APP fouling is consecutive not cumulative so in effect the gun was one shot dirty.
all in all a very good day
respectfully submitted
