Working on the GPR kit and I notice that the end of the ram rod sticks out past the barrel about 1/2" is this correct or do I need to make the ram rod hole deeper. Thanks in advance.

Well I dunno but ... both of my smokepoles ramrods hangout the end .. personal pref I suppose! Also makes it easier to grasp the rod whilst loadin and cleanin! Just don make em too long! :shocked2:

It could be that your ramrod is too long?
On my .50 GPR, the end of the ramrod is about 5/16 under the face of the muzzle when it is in the thimbles. When it's inserted into the barrel, it sticks about 1 3/4 out of the muzzle.

The only problem I've heard of on guns with the ramrod protruding beyond the front of the muzzle comes from hunters.
If it is sticking out, it can snag on brush etc when your carrying it in the field, sometimes resulting in it being broken.

Your rod should end at the muzzle. If you can, make the hole deeper, or trim the rod if you still have plenty to use.I really don't know if this is true or not, but many target shooters claim that since the gases would hit the rod, it will affect the path of the ball. I feel that since the ball is out of the muzzle and ahead of the gases, it would not. However they will scorch your rod.

Hey Wick,
I shoot my 28ga tradegun with a jag on the end of the rod. If it effects accuracy or point of impact I think I'll just leave it there. The gun is a tack driver! I shoot my .50 the same way and as far as I can tell there is no effect. I have had people tell me that it will pull the point of impact lower. I'm not buying it.

I have left them sticking out 3" with no ill effect on accuracy and while hunting I have had no problem tangling up with anything, it is a matter of preference I believe.

Great input for what I thought would be a pretty easy question. After reading all the replies I think I will leave it sticking out the 1/2 inch as it makes pulling it out much easier, if it was back it would be harder to grab with the rib right there. When the rod is finished and the barrel browned I think it will look fine
Thanks again for the info.

I've always made my hunttin rods so they protrude about 1 1/2 to 2" past the muzzle. Heard all the pros and cons, never had any problems with them snaggen up. When you're carrying a long rifle what's another inch or two??? Easier to get a hold of when your hands are cold and also give more to grip when ya have clean in the field. Anyway it works for me and I ain't a changin!!! :v

Mine protrudes a bit also. I want to be able to get it back out while cleaning in the field.

The only problem I ever saw occur with a protruding ramrod was when my brother-in-law's .45 longrifle slid sideways where it was leaning against the back seat of his SUV, banging the muzzle against the top edge of one of the doors. The ramrod tip snapped off. However, this probably would have happened even if the tip had been flush with the muzzle, instead of sticking out 1/2" or so, and, besides, I figure when something gets dropped or banged around, all bets are off.

Captgary: I had the same problem on the GPR kit I just finished. The screw at the front of the trigger guard/assembly was too long - extended into the ramrod channel. Try installing the ramrod with the trigger guard removed - chances are you need to trim your screw also..........jbrent

i take a file and cut small notches in the last 1 1/2 inches so i can get a grip while swabbing and cleaning my barrels

Doesn't the end of the ramrod get scortched from the powder blast? I have seen many rod tips get blackend this way.

Uncle Jed,

My ramrod tips and or jags get a discoloration but I have never seen any scorching. I have noticed that the jags also show signs of corrosion on one side if they are replaced in the same orientation over time.
