Is it really worth re-boring a 50 cal bore, i have a tc hawkins with a pre warning, 4 diget serial no, and it shoots all over the place, i tried steel wool, valve lapping coumpound, and scotch brite pad . Nothing seems to work. I run the patch down and it seems real rough and it will not smooth out,

I see on here, there is Robert Hoyt, that re-bores them reasonably .i would like to keep the rifle for hunting and feel it is a good candiate for target and deer hunting.

I have other muzzle loaders , but this one is great shape other than the bore.

When Robert Hoyt does these , does he remove the breech and bore all the way thru, and does it booger it up and make it noticable??

Bob Hoyt did mine earlier this year. I had the same problem you have. Hard to load and difficulty with grouping. Bob took it out to 54 cal and gave it round bottom rifling with 1 in 66" twist. He did unbreech the barrel and rebreeched it when done. It's noticeable but not much. The rifle now loads easily and shoots great.

So is a 1-66 twist only for round ball . i think it has a 1-48 twist now, which is better?? how much did it cost to get done, how long did it take to do??

1 in 48 is for both patched round ball and maxi and such bullets. If you want it for round ball only you want the 1 in 66.

1:48 twist being good for both round balls and bullets was contrived by T/C years ago and bought into by scores of shooters as sold to them by writers paid to say as much.

The science behind rifling was worked out decades before the founders of T/C were even conceived and doesn't support their claims.

Whether or not a barrel shoots round balls or conicals effectively is more a matter of style of rifling than it is pitch.

1:48 is a great round ball pitch if the rifling is deep and the lands narrow and the grooves wide. 1:66 is fine for calibers .50 and up and will allows for larger powder charges = higher velocity.

1:56 is a good compromise if rifled for roundballs.

Conical rifling has grooves and lands that are even in width or close to it and the grooves should be shallow.

1:48 is less than ideal for conicals and most will achieve better accuracy and easier load developement with a faster twist, especially with longer bullets.

Enjoy, J.D.

From what I hear his work is second to none! All my barrels are shooting well but I would love one with round bottom rifling. Geo. T.

All I shoot is PRB so the 1-66 is good for me. The cost was $100.00 plus shipping and my turnaround time was about five weeks but that was in March/April time frame. I've read on here that that is pretty fast for Mr. Hoyt because he is in such demand and this is the busy season. He does great work and the results are well worth the time and money.

I really prefer the balance of the 54 over the 50, so there might be extra bonus points for you in a rebore. That is, if you would like a little less muzzle weight in your gun.

|hanks to all, i tried clling him but it went into an answering machine, i will keep trying

Yes, you need to keep trying. It took me several calls to reach Mr. Hoyt last summer when he turned my .56 smoothie into a .58 rifle barrel but with some persistence I finally got him on the phone, discussed the project with him and I sent the barrel on its way. Definitely worth the minor dialing effort.

so what is the differant in round bottom rifling, is this what factory rifling is???

just courious..........

Just got off the phone with Bobby Hoyt, he recommended a re-bore to 54 cal, with a 1-60 twist round botton rifling for my gun. He said it is a good twist rate for Patched Round Ball - hunting and it is alot easier to clean also and more foregiving than flat bottom . |||Well it will have to be boxed up and sent off , he said he is got enough work for the next 4 year . He also said it all started with doing one gun for someone and it was so good he posted it to the web and next thing he is getting so much work and he does not advertise or use the computer, just the word of mouth helped him alot. Real nice talking to him.

don't know who posted first. but a year ago he did 2 barrels for me . each took less tha 3 weeks there and back. they shot like thunder. but then came a 72 cal flint trade musket I had to have. oh well. next rifle I ll keep. I hope

Just a passing thought... before you pay to have the barrel rebored there is nothing to loose by really extensive lapping. And elbow grease is pretty cheap.

I tried the lapping coumpound and steel wool , i hear about slugging a bore and other methods. what is your best idea to do this?

If Mr. Hoyt does it - it will be done right and you get the added
benifit of a 54.
I had him do my A&H for me and am quite satisfied.
As a 50 it shot great but I wanted to go 54 after a couple
seasons with my 54 Beck.
The 54 is the perfect big deer medicine.
