My old CVA Big Bore Mountain needs to be re-browned. It is real patcy and blotchie. How do I go about this? Do I have to take it all the way down to the white first? What do you folks consider a good brand chemical for this? Thanks in advance for any tips you can give me.

I wouldn't say you have to take it down to the white, but if there are rust pits, you may have to.

Laurel Mountain Forge has a really good barrel brown.

Yes you should strip it back to clean steel. I would degrease the barrel and whatever parts first. Then sand all surfaces with wood or file backed 150gr emery paper, Do not touch the steel with your hands use cotton gloves. Oil is the enemy of a good brown job. Then go to 220gr. Now you are ready for chemicals. I prefer Wakon Bays brown. Follow their directions. You may need to build some sort of damp box this time of year to get the rust going properly.BJH

Use Naval Jelly from the hardware store. It will strip the browning off a barrel in 15-30 minutes and you'll be ready to re-brown in about an hour. Forget sanding or filing !

BC super blue can be used to brown just apply and dont neutralize until it browns, simple, cheap and fast.
