I agree with ETipp on going to .018 ticking. I use .530 with .018 ticking and mink oil in my Colerain .54.

If the gun has been shot for over a decade one would think the sharp edge of the rifling or muzzle would not be an issue…
Is it possible the patch material is old and just being slightly cut while loading…
Try using additional lube on the patch that may help as well.
