I wanted to know where i could buy black powder in California? i live near Sacramento and would prefer to buy the powder from a gun shop or sporting goods place rather then order it online. i dont want to use Pyrodex anymore...just does'nt seem like the "traditional" thing to do.any help would be great...thanks

Nicholas,
I just left your home area and retired here to Alabama. While I was there, I belonged to the Yolo Front Loaders at the Yolo range in Winters. The club would have a match once a month. It consisted of rifle, pistol, knife and tomahawk throw. The club would put in a mass powder order for it's members every so often. You could also check the range outside of Ione to see if they have a club there. There are no retailers that stock black powder in the entire valley. The club always kept me well supplied. Other than that, its all about mail order. Powder Inc. : http://www.powderinc.com/index.html or the Maine Powder House : http://www.mainepowderhouse.com/ . Good luck on your search  .

Mr. Earp,

How much BP do you need? i live outside of sac and just picked up a case. i can throw some at you.
:v

If you ever venture as far north as Springfield, Oregon, they have it OTC at The Gun Works. Nice folks, and you'll want to budget lots of time for cruising their shop.

Cost is the big factor in most...not all....OTC sales. Even if you only order 10 pounds of BP, it shouldn't run more than $14 per pound or so, including HazMat, delivered to your door. As I always suggest, find a couple of buddies and order a case of 25# and split the cost.

IN additon to these two suppliers, you also can place orders for 5# or more from Graf &Sons, which I believe is located in Missouri. There is a link to them here on the Index Page, under Member Resources. Teh cheapest way to buy powder is go go in with friends, and order a 25 lb. case. That spread the Haz Mat fee over the entire quantity, and reduces the cost per lb.

year or two ago Sierra Gun Supply in Auburn carried goex black powder not sure if they still do, I would definitely call first. That's the only place I know of and I live in Rocklin, just outside of Sacramento.
