Been shooting pyrodex for the last couple years in my percussion guns.
Now that I'm shooting flintlock most of the time I used up what I had left of my ffg.
After locating a dealer that still stocks blackpowder I had to pay $19.00 a lb. for G&O ffg.
This is in Ohio .
Did I get ripped off or is that a fair price?
How much do you all pay for black in your part of the contry?

I've bin paying $13.50 to $15.00 a Lb. in the east side of PA for Goex.

If you can swing it, buying it by the case is always the cheapest...I get Goex for $10/Lb delivered to my front door

:hmm:The cost of BP is not the price increased, you most remebmer that Hazmat cost is based on your location,which brings the cost up. If you think BP cost is high, be in the enviromental business and have some products shipped to you, boy then see what Hazmat cost is $$$$.Stop and compare BP cost per lb to what some of the so call replacement powders are, BP is still cheaper and BETTER.

With all the new red tape and added paper work, it's a wonder you can still get it at all. It is high but your alternative is to buy bulk yourself as was mentioned and then you do all the stuff that goes along with keeping bulk BP. Storage and paperwork.

I am surely not an expert so don't take my questions as being argumentive. I'm asking so I will know?

You could be right about that...I assumed the statement was a general one based upon Federal regs and was trying to clarify that the Feds don't require that

I will only speak for me...I'm personally convinced that's incorrect...doesn't mean I can't be wrong of course...but I'm a little detailed/paranoid when it comes to things like this as I have no interest in breaking the law, given the climate and mood of our country lately. Besides, it would be almost impossible to set up a mechanism for all the private citizens to start calling and notifying the Government every time they bought some BP...and how would it be enforced...no, if anything like that is done at all, I suspect the 'sellers' probably have to keep a log of who bought what, when, how much, etc.

I've read the regs and no changes were made by the Homeland Security Act to the Federal laws governing the consumer purchase and storage of up to 50lbs of BP for recreational/sporting purposes...I've crawled through it in detail, have discussed it in detail, have called my State Fire Marshall's office and discussed it, etc...and have satisfied myself that I can store up to 50lbs BP on my premises without any special paperwork, facilities, etc, and have done so for a few years now.

The best thing anybody can do is invest a little time to personally familiarize themselves with the regs involved...none of us should really take someone elses word for anything like this...telling the Feds while you're spread-eagled on the driveway that "somebody on the Internet said it was OK" probably won't get much sympathy from them.

You are correct regarding the fed. regs. I stand corrected. :master: I found the same exemption you mentioned but the poor guys selling the BP at the local level does have the new (couple of years old) rules and regs to deal with so it is reasonable for the local guy to *** you on the price some. :imo:

This seems to be a common topic. As yet, there is no national restriction on owning/storage of less than 50 pounds, although occasionally some wild-eyed Congressman tries. NRA & NMLRA are good at letting us know. Most of the restrictions are municipal: I recall when San Antonio adopted a new fire code for retailers, & black powder became scarcer than Jim Bowie's personal belt knife. We could only find two stores that would carry it, & price almost doubled to cover the cost of tne required magazine & handling requirements. And if your city is wierd enough to adopt the UN fire code, it only allows one (yeah, one) pound of black powder. Yet when I did order 50 pounds of powder from a San Antonio address, I had no problems in receiving it, so all I can say is check w/ your prospective supplier.

Incredible....forgive me...I was born and raised in NY state...but I just have to say this:

Federal Blackpowder requlations are good enough for the entire United States of America...but then there's New York !!

We're going up for a family reunion later this year and I was going to take a flintlock so we could have a little fun out on the farm, but it would be just my luck I'd get stopped driving up for some unrelated reason and they'd find a pound of Goex...lord, what is this world coming to !!!!!!

The crooks and terrorists keep right doing whatever they want to do of course...our lawmakers are simply disgusting!

I can get goex black powder locally here in Ohio for about $14 dollars in a number of areas. Your best bet is either order it or go to Friendship IN when the NMLA has one of thier events and pick a bunch there. The areas I am talking about is Chillicothe, Lancaster, Zanesville and lodi. I travel alot in Ohio so local for me is anything within 1 1/2 hour drive. :results:

I get GOEX from TOW, last time was $11.02 per lb., delivered to my door. If you bought a case-25 lbs.- they covered the Haz-Mat fee. I felt this was a good deal.

Goex is running between $14-16 a pound in Ohio. I've seen it as high as $19, fortunately, I didn't need it that bad :shake:
