Mike is spot on. There is nothing in New York that you can't kill with a .56 smoothbore. The 20 gauge rules are only for buck shot not patched round ball.

I suppose if the bear is still comng and you have to use your rifle like a baseball bat, it would break.

I think the 20 gauge rule has to do with modern shotguns, a muzzleloader only has to be above .45

The 20 ga rule applies to slugs

I've read the firearm smoothbore section and the way it explains the rule sounds to me it's for modern smoothbores and BP guns are a separate thing all together.
