December 27, 2002. First shot passed through. This T/C MaxiHunter was a follow up shot while the doe was down but head up just after reloading. All my loads centered around 65 grains of Goex FFFG. This shot was a strong quartering to aimed at the front of the chest, the bullet hit at an angle that the caused the bullet to break and deflect off about 3 ribs and then sliding up under the back strap. Again, this original style MaxiHunter was HP'd 3/16"X3/16".

I just watched a Leatherwood Outdoors video titled Flintlock Longrifle Deer Hunting 2025 - Huge Doe vs .50. In it, John Royer states that round balls don't expand and leave little blood trail because of small holes!😵

Guess we need to introduce John to this thread FULL of big flattened round balls and massive holes! 🤣

I like his traditional muzzleloader videos, but I have no idea where he came up with that! 🤔🤭

I saw that one too. I will say, without a pass through shot, mine have bleed dramatically less. So much that if there weren’t snow on the ground I would have thought I’d of missed the last one. Just my experience

Agreed! Two holes is best. I’ve had lesser blood trails if I don’t get a pass thru. I look at it like opening a can of cream. Sure, you get the cream out if you punch a single hole, but it comes out a lot better if you punch that second hole!

Two holes are better than one, but one can bleed a LOT. I really wish I would have taken a couple pictures of the blood trail from my frontal shot buck this year. Single hole about 7" below the throat patch. The pile of blood where it first fell upon impact was the size of a dinner plate. Every 5 or 6 feet after that was a thick pile about 5 or 6" across. Spray inbetween. Stevie Wonder could have followed it.

I did take a picture of the blood trail of a large doe I shot from a treestand quartering to me. The hit was at the juncture of the shoulder and neck, high due to the downward angle. After 15 yards the blood was pouring out and did so for 50 yards or so to where she went down.

I use a .54 and need those blood trails since I don't have normal color vision.
