Any of you guys a chemically inclined flintlock shooter?
Just wondering what it is that turns the pan red like this after a shot. It doesn't stay red long, maybe seconds. It took me a couple shots to get these pictures as it disappears so fast. I'm shooting 80 grains of Schuetzen 2F in my 54 Kibler.
I haven't noticed it in a pan, but have many times at the muzzle. Usually on humid days. We refer to it as 'blood in the barrel', thought to be an indication that everything is burning well. (Sulfur compound?)

That's cool seeing it on the frizzen or pan.
I've never seen it except inside the muzzle.
If you burn sulfur, around the flaming you'll see it turn red. It's just what it does.

I get little red beads around the muzzle sometimes - it is said that when this happens that your powder charge, patch and ball are just right. I think it's the humidity. :dunno: :ghostly:
