removing the raised cheek piece

My CVA Hawken that I bought from an individual(the same cad, that said I as a newbie should be loading 100grns with Sabots)and the butt has the raised cheek piece. I have never liked cheek pieces or such and am curious if I can sand that down to smooth & flush with the butt without harming the integrity or the strength of the wood? I am familiar with finishing and refinishing wood so that part poses no particular problem for me.

Should be no problem. The cheek piece doesn't extend into the wrist anyhow, and that is the weak link in most stocks.

My first kit was a CVA Mtn rifle..since I'm left-handed, and it was a right handed gun, the cheek piece was useless to me...I got an occasional razzing for putting the gun to the "wrong shoulder"...I took it off...still shoot the gun, 35 years later..go to it..Hank

Holy smokes, I just read or rather re read my post. The way it reads, I am gaining confidence in this forum. What I meant to convey is that since I joined this forum and thanks to all you good folks who have so graciously helped me in my learing I have gained much confidence in living the life of a black powder shooter.

The deed may be done by now but I think I would use a spoke shave to take most of the wook off and a sanding block to finish up.

Glad to have your advice, I havn't started the project yet. But was planning on getting it underway to day. I don't have a spoke shave but I will try to come up with one on my journey out and about today. Thanks again.

A wood rasp is what I'd use. It would take a week and a half to sand it off.... :winking:

Get a rasp, like Mike recommends, besides it's one of those primary tools that if yer gonna build, kit or scratch, you will use a lot. Buy a good one they're pretty reasonable, and should last a long time. Bill

If you use the wood rasp, switch over to a double cut bastard file when you get down to within 1/16 of the finished surface. The rasp is notorious for brusing the wood grain. This brusing will show up when you "whisker" (apply water to raise the grain) the stock.

Although it's not PC, if you have access to a belt sander or a drum sander, it will do a nice job of removing the majority of the wood.
For rapid removal, sand/file "across the grain". As it gets down to finished size, sand/file "with the grain"
