Is it just me or Do I get the feeling that the Government wants it to disappear. The requirements are tough and Insurance companies don;t want to insure buildings that store it. I was told that after this lot sells no more. Anybody else with the same problems. Anything we can do to help the industry?

Yes, find a store that sells it and buy from them. If nobody buys it, they won't carry it any more.

I live in Massachusetts one of the three worst states for gun owner to live in. That being said I have two sorces of black powder within a in a 15 min. drive. We are no longer allowed to buy powder and loading components from places like Grafs, Midway, or Mid South. There is a black powder distributor in western Ma. where you can buy in case lot but you can only store two pounds of black in your home at a time.5 if you get a special permit from your fire martial....Jim

How are they gonna know what you have in your home? Hells bells, I'd surely buy as much as I want. They can kiss my big fat behind if they want to know what I've got.

Sounds like if ya but more than two pounds ya gotta go turn yerself in......quick, get outa that state before they fine ya for having bad gas after eatin' spicy chilli on account of destroyin' the Oh-zone layer!

Don't you understand, they are saving us from ourselves... :haha:

Would the 4th of July fireworks display be the same if the fireworks used Pyrodex or 777 as their main charge?

I think not...

It's Un-American, no, it's Un-Worldly to take away our black powder...

Blah,
there is a two page paper trail you that you have to fill out every time you have to buy powder...

Then doesn't it seem obvious that you should buy more powder less often? Buy it in quantity. You also live close enough to other states that you can drive over and buy what you want there, and take it back to Massachusetts. I would not make such a drive for one can of BP, considering todays gas prices, but If I were going to buy 10 lbs. it would be worth it.

Why can't ya drive to PA or maybe Ohio and buy a bunch?

I know a shop in Nescopeck that could sell ya some....it is a drive though.

That really sucks for you guys in MA, wish there was some better way for you guys to get that stuff.

To answer Joe's question, yes it is getting hard to find BP retailers. Kentucky is about as wide open as any state in the Union when it comes to gun laws. No silly restrictions on black powder here other than the Fed's 50 lb. limit. No one in this neck of the woods is selling the stuff anymore. Closest place I could find selling it over the counter to the public is Bass Pro Shops in Cincinnati, over a 100 miles away - @ $20.00 a can. If you are a NMLRA member you can pick up the same can, 45 minute drive away over @ Friendship, IN, for $10.00 (last time I checked there anyway). Though it seems that the ATF and Insurance companies are trying to force the product off the market, it seems the main reason for the decline of retailers is that they just do not sell enough to make it worth the hassle. I do believe that Fed-EX and UPS will be doing a bang up business in years to come hauling black powder from the high volume suppliers to the consumers who want it.

Just aside here - saw a great T-shirt the other day it said "Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms should be a convenience store, not a Bureau” Well put!

This has two answers that become one.
Its a political and social economic class battle going on. For one thing who uses black powder?
SImple really, the everyday guy using a 400 dollar gun from cabelas. While the people who make the politics are at the highest economic strata of society.
These are the people who feels its necessary to have a 4000 shotgun for each type of hunting they do (one for upland, one for downland, one for shooting ducks off a jon boat, etc).
This group has been turning hunting into a rich man only sport. Theyve made it a "requirement" to spend 4000 to buy a deer, and then spend 5000 for a week at a gamefarm/hotel/entertainment complex to shoot at deer over a feed station.
And then look at modern weapons, they brainwash people into thinking its worthless unless you opt for the 2000 wonder scope to go along with the 1200 rifle..... And then the ammunition, unless you want poor performance from your new rifle, you need to reload or purchase high performance ammo. And that puts you on government lists, sad but true that buying even 1,000 of .22 short puts you on a list for being a "survivalist" which they call a "terrorist sympathizer or anarchist".

And then like here in Michigan, bout 20 years ago the state cops started trying to get black powder guns banned. Seems that bullet proof vests dont work with crap when hit with roundball from a pistol or even a brownbess. And to get rid of those you get rid of the good propellent, black powder.

PJ,
I have written letters to my U.S. state rep
in congress on several issues that concerned
me. State reps in almost all cases will respond
to your concerns. Maybe not what you want to hear, but they do respond. State senators are
a completely different story as they have never
responded to my concerns.
I still feel that it does not hurt to let
all our people in government know how we feel.
Just an opinion
snake-eyes :hmm:

i really cant write about this but you sure sond like you got it right , th facts anyway . here the atf went around once a week to each store with black powder makeing them pull it all out , counting it twice till they shut down all of the places that carry it near us , the last to go down was ownned by SWAT team members and they gave as good as they got till they lost the lease . blaine

Having moved to Florida recently I don't know where to buy it locally. For years now I go into a case load w/ some of my mates and we order from the Maine powderhouse.I realize there is a significant hazmat charge but WTH.Don't you find it ironic that the state who cried the loadest for freedom 200 odd years ago are now the most repressive in the Union.
