Just last month, I officially joined the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol club. Only been shooting once, though. They have a couple of ranges that allow black powder.

Hi James, I've lived in most areas of the state at some point except the SW, but my current location is along the S. Fk. Shenandoah River, about half way between Luray and Front Royal. I've got some land here. I was in Idaho hunting and fishing for 17 years, good country but it's best for those with younger bodies!

Glad you are back. Not my business, but why would you leave Idaho? I lived in VA all my life and had plenty of flyfishing and hunting, but VA can't compare to Idaho in that regard. Maybe you are like me: I had to move to FL late in life. I surely do miss my beloved mountains and changing seasons. Here it is either too warm or hot. No hunting I am interested in. Even the squirrels are tiny.

Hi Mike. Ah, I've gotten that question a lot, even from family. The reasons are many. We were out there 17 years, and that was my second time living in the west, but all our family is here in Va, and aging and dying off fast. I did a lot of hunting out there, and spent a lot of time trying to find a really big mule deer in particular. I got some nice bucks, but never the monster. The time to have been big mule deer hunting in the west was in the 50s - 80s, they really went downhill after that. Lots of good elk hunting still though. Also the amount of pressure now, and the whole preference points thing and other complexities associated with getting tags is a turn off. I noticed things really changing in the 2000s and early 2010 decade, pressure wise etc. I'm 64 now and it is very remarkable how those big mountains seem to get bigger and steeper every year !! Lastly I've got a nice chunk of land here, and more that I manage, and fighting invasives and habitat work keeps my occupied.

Where about is your land..I have a decent parcel, just South of Farmville....near GreenBay, Va that my personal woods walk and sanity spot.....Working the land is always a adventure....Love to hear some tips and trick to land management.

Hi James. My place is on the S. Fk. Shenandoah River in northern Page County, but I spent my teens living near where your land is (Hampden Sydney), and I have family still in that area.
