Until some factual data of actual blowups of bbls made of 12L14 are presented, why all the conjecture of it's unsuitability to withstand BP pressures? Geez!

If there are failures of 12L14 bbls, it would be logical for the info to be forthcoming and why would BP bbl makers still persist w/ 12L14 steel if that's the case?

If some are queasy about using 12L14 bbls, use a different steel, but to "badmoth" 12L14 w/o any evidence of failures smacks of.....?

Oh...I know.... there's a big "coverup" of a 12L14 conspiracy in the BP bbl industry.....Fred

I know I am not concerned with using a 12L14 barrel and if there was a problem with it I think it would have come to a head long ago.

I am still curious about the steel used in Thompson Center and Lyman ball barrels. Does anyone know what they are?

As a long time machinist I can tell from experience that 12L14 will give you at least twice the tool life of 8620. Tooling cost money. :hmm: I have barrels made from 12L14 (Douglas). As well as green mountain , T.C. ,Juker, and Sharon. None have failed or shown any signs of bugling.Just as a side note I make my breech plugs out of stress proof steel simply because it is what I have a lot of! :hmm:

I did a little search on Jim McLemore and Sleepy Hills barrels. His website states he is no longer making barrels. I also tried to find a website for Ed Rayl and wasn't able to come up with anything. Looks like the availability of anything other than 12L14 is a little slim.

:metoo: In fact, I just bought a Rice 44" .54 C-weight barrel. Everything I've heard from those who use them has been good. If it shoots like all of my other .54s, somewhere between 80-85 grains should be just fine. No need to test magnum loads.
Just my opinion. YMMV.
