folks i am looking for books or videos or hammer-ins on barrel forging and drilling ...also any info on homemade boring machines....i know i am cruisin for a bruisin....thanks bugsy

Start with the classic 1967-8 film The Gunsmith of Williamsburg in which a very young Wallace Gusler shows the building of a complete rifle using tools and technology availble in colonial America. Shot on location in the Colonial Williamsburg gunshop and narrated by David Brinkley this was the landmark film in showing the revival of many lost skills including forge welding and reaming (not drilling) a rifle barrel.

For information directly from the 18th century you may want to get a copy of "An Essay on Shooting" author unknowm but thought to be John Acton. Originally published in London in 1789.
It is/was available as a reprint from Rutgers Books or Ray Riling Books a while back.

This was the methods we used in the shop where I worked.

Regards, Dave

I have a copy of the Williamsburg video, and will loan it out for the cost of postage. PT me with an address. If I get multiple names I will make up a list and we'll work out how it should be passed on.

I bought my copy from Colonial Williamsburg many years ago. They may still sell them. You might check their web site.

Saw a copy of the Williamsburg video on the big on-line auction site e(short name for estuary) recently.

You can get the Williamsburg film right from their website. I still think its about $25 plus shipping.

Just checked their website.they have a gunsmith of williamsburg film but it isn't the original.looks like a pc watered down version for $19.95.what a shame. I guess they are afraid the terrorists are going to be mass forge welding rifle barrels. i guess the original will be worth some money now.Centaur Forge has the same thing for $24.95.the old one is gone.looks like an e-bay thing.sad.

They list it at 59 minutes. I think it's uncut. I think that Gary or Wallace would fight cutting it down.

The only thing that is changed is the lower price and new cover art featuring a photo of one on the current gunsmiths.
