Suggest you take a fresh front sight along. Might come in handy.

Glad somebody learned something from this. :rotf:

LB so your saying your rifle will shoot one ragged hole at 30 and still be hitting high at 50 yards ? :idunno: If so I'm glad that my rifle is not the only one capable of this gravity defying act . :v You are talking about one of the 1/2" shoot & see dot at 25 correct?

No I have the larger 3/4 dots that come a hundred to a pack. Hell they might even be 7/8ths as I'v never measured them. My rear sight is much higher than my front sight. We all know a rifle has two zero points if the sights are configured correctly. With this configuration and with a load of 80 grains of 3f and a .445 ball it shoots the first zero at 25 yards with a 6 oclock hold. The ball is still rising at 50 yards in order to drop to its second zero at 100 yards With my sight configuration and muzzle velocity has this zero somewhere in the black in a 3-4 inch group on a good day. This is a deer hunting zero. Now when I lower the powder charge in order to lower the POA so I can hold the front sight dead on the black dot in a Turkey shoot all this goes out the window as all I'm interested in is hitting the black dot at 25.

One other factor is using an bored off centered barrel from back in the day that had to be installed in the stock so the off center was at the top requiring a higher than normal rear sight (or lower than normal front sight) but this is just speculation.
