Hello
1000004904.jpg
, quick update on the Scottish musket, I've inlet the barrel, and have carved a shape into the stock that fits me and that i find pleasing. Also note that from this point forward this gun is no longer a historical copy of the original, its my interpretation or a Scottish arm. I'm starting to carve designs into it and I will continue to post pics of the progress overall its a nice kit but i had to hire out to someone else on the lock. Flinternick took on the task of assembly of the lock wich will post more details of as they come.

Hello,

Can anyone show me an example of what The Rifle Shoppe's "Scottish musket" (665) or their "James II musket" (774) are supposed to look like when they are completed? If not completed, does anyone have a picture of the assembled lock for the James II musket?

Thanks!

Hi ya ! I will keep the Link updated on progress.

The only thing I’m doing differently with the lock is making a square nut for the cock screw so its stabilized a little better, customer’s request too.

It’s a fairly simple design, i look Forward to completing it.

Just got the fluting roughed in, makes for very good grip actually. I will smooth everything in the next couple days and decide what will be towards the butt, haven't decided if I'm going to use the sheet steel or horn for the butt cap, or perhaps nothing at all

Got the lugs installed and the front end roughed into shape still trying to decide on carvings but progress is progress. The final shape and architecture is very nice in the hand this will certainly be a light shotgun
Whose barrel did you use? I am planning a long term similar project and other than having a smith who can do milled in bands what other options could there be for ornate barrel rings?

While there were certainly "Scotttish" style long guns by the 45 rising it was whatever they could get
So a 42 octagon to round 20ga would be OK? I mean that’s what I’m gonna use so it doesn’t really matter there either!!! I’m working out proportions from multiple old pics.

As long as they date back to 1746 or earlier
I’m drawing proportions from some pics in Drummond’s Ancient Scottish Weapons and any other pic I can find. May make up a couple cardboard ones to decide how it looks. As pics are 2d have a lot of guessing to do on how it’s going to be finished but since I’m a rank amateur at all this honestly if it looks remotely like a rifle I’ll be pleased. I have a lot of wood available for practice so I have no stress about this. I’ve never done more that bolt action stock inletting and some broken stock repair. But I am game to try it.

To the people of Scotland, this King James is not the second but the "seventh and second" just as his grandfather (of KJV Bible fame) was James the sixth and first. King James II was killed by an exploding cannon in 1460.

I can see why the Rifle Shoppe would prefer to keep things simple.
The canon is now at Edinburgh Castle its called' Mons Meg' minus a chunk that blew off and hit the king .It was a breach loader cant trust them breech loaders ! To be fair I expect they loaded from the muzzle but its made with two sections ,I think its 21" bore & smaller than the Dardanelles gun. That's at the Tower of London again a breach loader if perhaps just to transport it . Both fired stone balls .Don't try That at home !.
Re James 11probally much like Wm the third Iv'e made them . No idea what TRS offer now my last catalogue is1999 edition . All interesting

Doodles of the trigger design and a rough shape. Mentally I want to make that buttstock longer than it’s needs to be. Once I get the barrel and rough out the stock I’ll make a new thread.
