Totally depends on what you are looking for. Always fun to check out TOTW and see what's available in the "I wish I'd saved up some more lunch money" department! Whichever way you decide to go, be sure you're dealing with someone reputable...trust me, it saves many headaches. I'll let the gang make recommendations. First you need to decide what you want. :thumbsup:

There are rifles for sale in the classified on this forum. Sportsman Warehouse, Cabelas, etc.... Depends how much you want to spend and what caliber your looking for. :hmm:

If a brand new gun is wanted, buying it at a store where it can be handled is the best idea.
If I couldn't make it to a gun show for a used gun, the Forums Classified section would be my first choice.
The members of the Forum have a reputation to uphold on the Forum and I would trust their description of any gun they offer for sale.
A lowly Pawn Shop might be my next choice but as many muzzleloaders have been mistreated by their previous owners by not cleaning them properly I would be very cautious.
Guns offered on the Web would rate at the bottom of my search list.
It's too easy for a person to call a rusty hollow fence post strapped to a board, "Practically NEW Muzzleloader!", "An all time Classic!", and other glorious names.
Giving a few of the people who offer used muzzleloaders on the Web some credit, I must also mention that many of them really don't know that an uncleaned, rusted barrel is next to worthless.

If you tell us what you are after and a ball park of what you want to spend, someone can probably point you in a direction.
From Cabela's you can get an off the shelf Traditions for about 500 bucks or drop a little over a grand on a Pedersoli.
For just under $600 you can get a Lyman from Track of the Wolf - or, they have antique and custom built rifles (mostly used) in the 700-3000 dollar range.
You can get a semi-custom in 6 months to a year and spend somewhat over $1000 (plain) to $2000 fancy.

There are two muzzleloading clubs in South Dakota and one super rendevous at White SD over the 4th of July. The Great Plains rendevous which has folks from five states attending in June and it is just south of Fargo. Make contacts with them to find out when they have shoots and attend to ask questions. There is also a large gun show in Sioux Falls on Feb 8th. I have seen BP rifles there but you might have to spend $700.00 to $2000.00 but you will get hold them and look them over. I will be attending and looking them over myself. Brookings also has had a trade fair if it is still going on. Send me a PM and I might be able to give you a contact or two depending on where you live.

I know you said you are just shopping right now, if at some point you order a new gun online, make some phone calls and verify their return/fix policies and ask alot of questions on every "what if" scenario you can think of-should something go wrong or you receive a poorly built gun. Look at some past topics about lyman guns and you'll see what i mean.Trailsend said:

In this area of Texas there are a fair number of traditional rifles in pawn shops. They can be had pretty cheap except right before deer season. I have had no trouble with taking a cleaning and patches as well as a small flash light to inspect the bores.

I will also chime in and say take a look through the classifieds here on the forum. I have bought 2 guns from the guys here and I have no complaints. Guy that sold me a flintlock pistol even threw in a bunch of flints and a roundball mold I didn't expect.

If you're looking around for a Lyman/Investarms rifle, compare the combination of price + tax (or not) + shipping to buy from whoever has the best total cost.
Midway, Midsouth, Cabelas, Track of the Wolf, Octobercountry, Jedediah-Starr, and others all handle the same models, and the out-the-door price may vary by as much as $100. Look around a lot before making a final decision.
My first flintlock GRR (lefthanded) came from Octobercountry because they were the only place that would admit to being able to get one. My current .54 cal. Deerstalker lefthanded flint came from Jedediah-Starr, because this model is no longer in the Lyman Catalog, and they had one on hand and delivered it to me in under a week.
Prices and inventory change, and often Cabelas will ship for free to their nearest store. That may be an option if your gasoline cost for picking up the free delivery at the store is less than the somewhere around $21 for delivery to your barn door.

Well looking around is good, this is the "modern" age google long rifles or flintlocks or percussion hunting guns. you'll see plenty. Give us an idea of what you want & a price line, maybe someone will know something then...Tom
I went around to a few gun shops today that used to carry used ones but they cleaned up and got rid of their interesting guns. One I could always count on having 8 or 10 guns had nothing.

Some states some rifles can not be shipped to without an FFL.
Also knowing your state and at least a general area, a forum member might know of a good gunshop near you.
Don't forget to check pawn shops. But get an agreement in writing to be able to test shoot and have a reputable gunsmith check it out before buying.

I was in a used to be favorite shop few days ago and saw a really nice old CVA .58 mnt rifle. Decent price. Was gonna come back with a bore light. Then I asked about .22 lr and they had 2 bricks! When they told me they wanted $69.00 each I advised I would never be back! Taking advantage of return customers will NOT be tolerated ever. Too bad I been wantin one for awile.
Should have bought the MNT rifle first and then said I'll never be back. :haha:
