I seem to recall putting so many holes around a pigeon that I though the backer would fail and the cardboard and pigeon would fall to the ground. Would that qualify as a hit? :D

What distance are the targets they are shooting at?

National course of fire for small arms is 50 and 100yd, all offhand, against the clock, unbroken targets count against your score. A clay pigeon at 50yd is the same as an 8in black at 100yd. Each arm will shoot pretty much this course of fire with modifications for smoothbores and revolvers and single shot pistols.

Entire National course of fire for N-SSA competition is 5 events-
1- 32 clay pigeons on a backer at 50yd, 5min time limit
2- 16 4in ceramic tiles hanging on wires at 50yd, 5min time limit
3- 16 clay pigeons hanging on wires at 50yd, 5min time limit
4- 16 "clay pot" silhouettes hanging on wires at 50yd, 5min time limit
5- 10 6x6 ceramic tiles hanging on wires at 100yd, 5min time limit

The best teams will clear a pigeon board in about 100-120sec and the events with 16 targets will last only about 60sec. They'll finish the 100yd event in about 60sec. Those guys are really, really good. The rest of us duffers just have a great time.

Each arm shot is divided into classes so the top experts are in their own world, class A1. The rest are divided into other classes. Example, our team shoots in Carbine A-2 and Musket in A-3. Class is determined by scores from Nationals. This last Nationals, we were handicapped by only having 5 guys out of 8 on the line and the heat hurt everybody. Even so, it's still great fun.

Thanks. From what I see all shooting is off-hand.

Yup and just to make things interesting, some of the target boxes contain "special pigeons". They're the ones that shrink to 1/4 size when the "Open Fire" horn sounds. There are others that have a force field to shield them from hits. There is always a "Neo" clay pot in the box that can avoid minies by doing "Matrix" moves.

I still maintain that you can mow down targets on your home range but we'll see how that goes when the horn sounds and the clock starts in competition and the pressure is on and you're up against the "special targets". 🤣
