Hiking alone up Mt. Marcy in NY’s Adirondacks High Peaks 35 years back. Dead of winter, 4 feet snow, tried to camp on narrow patch just off trail. Lost my nerve, hiked back to car, headed into Lake Placid, ordered a pizza and started 5 hour drive home. You’d think after almost 2 days on a mountain any pizza would be great? I ate a bite and tossed it out the window in horror. Coming from NJ we have some pretty great pizza. 😬

Man that must have been some bad pizza. I didn't know such a thing existed.

What in hell would make you want to be on Mt Marcy in the middle of winter! I'm 2 hours away from there, in NYS, and I've never wanted to go during the summer. Winter on that mountain is deadly.

Winter hiking and camping has its own rewards. I haven't hiked in the Adirondacks in the Winter, but I have hiked in the Blueridge Mountains and the Dolly Sods in West Virginia in the dead of Winter many times (long ago).
The solitude and quiet was wonderful. The naked trees punctuated by clusters of pines and Hemlocks here and there had its own stark beauty. Going from frigid night air into a down sleeping bag gave a sense of cozy security. Freeze dried food never tasted so good. I lost several pounds just from hiking up and down mountains and keeping warm.

It varied, was in for 28 years, and a branch jumper. Tank crewman, calvary scout, air mobile infantryman, gunners mate on a Knox class frigate, Sea Bee, Air Force weapons systems security specialist, and steamfitter in a Prime Beef squadron. I have wanderlust 😊

West Virginia in the dead of winter is a whole different world from the top of My Marcy.
