roundball, I got a question for ya,,
On my new 1 in 66 twist T/C custom barrel,,,,, Runnin a patch down the barrel after cleanin it, I have steady pressure all the way down and all the way up till I get to 2 3/4" from the end, then it seems to get a lil tighter, I don't feel it on the way in, just on the way out,, And I run the patch all the way down before I start it out,, Is this normal for a muzzle loader?? What ya think??? I even pulled the nipple, so it ain't suction,, I get it to where there is NO oil left in it and set it on the couch with out holdin it and pull the cleanin rod out with a patch on it ,, and it will pull the weapon up a lil when it gets to that spot, other wise, it just slides out, (till that spot)

I just OVER oiled the ballel and with an oiley patch, it does the same,,

I have no idea...I feel that on some of mine...TC, GM...doesn't matter...I don't know if it's because I'm starting to 'cant' the ramrod a little at the top of it's reach, or if that's where most of the fouling builds up the quickest, dunno...but I quit worrying about it a few years ago

I too would say that is the source, the ramrod would tilt slightly off center and cause more of the jag to "grab" the barrel, creating drag...

roundball, Musketman
0k boys, thanks, I did keep the rod straight, it is in the barrel, guess I won't worry bout it then,

Have yoiu scrubbed/cleaned it yet in hot soapy water to get out all the manufacturing oils, etc?

Have you shot it / does it shoot OK?

I guess you know if it turns out it's truly some sort of problem, TC will make it right without question.

I need to decide what to do about my remaining caplocks....45/.50/.54cals...like new, just laying oiled in their cases...about to start my 5th year with Flintlocks and just never use them but have been reluctant to get rid of them

BILL: would you have any idea who make the 1 in 66 twist T/C custom barrel ?

According to discussions I've had with a Fox Ridge staff, TC makes them right there in NH, they're not contracted out anywhere...ie: they still have the .45cal x 1:66" machine right there but stopped making the .45 a few years ago.

I'm confused...are you talking about a new 1:66" barrel or the barrel you already had?

If you use an oxyoke wonderwad you'll fix the shredded patch problem.
If you don't have any wads locally and want to see the difference, just lay a heavy piece of lubed denim patch over the muzzle and gently start it down with a pencil, screwdriver tip, etc...then seat a patched ball over it as you normally would.

(PS: did you mean 1,500 balls, instead of 15,000?)

roundball, sorry for the mistakes this mornin,
yep, it's the new barrel, I guess I will have to go with a wonderwad or an extra patch, I don't know why but I just didn't want to,,, and yep, I ment 1500 rounds, I can sea it's gonna be "one of those days"

Well, if you've got 1,500 balls through a new barrel, I'll wager it's probably settled down all it's going to settle down from just shooting it.

An 85grn charge gets a pretty hot fire going in there, particularly if it's 85grns of 3F.
IMO, I think that's why many people stop at 70grns because charges higher than that tend to result in patch failure due to burn through/blow by and accuracy starts to deteriorate.

Some sort of 'firewall' like an overpowder wad or spare thick patch takes care of that...the good news is a thick pillow ticking patch is usually all that's needed for target loads...only the max or near-max hunting loads seem to need some help...I only use wads for sighting in a hunting load and the occasional shot while hunting.

roundball, ship them to me. i'll see that they get a good home with lots of exercise. WK1
