To all my upstate NY fellow muzzleloaders. I am in search, in the Albany Area, of Black Powder. I have been to a couple in Colonie, 2 in Schaghticoke and 1 in Johnstown. None stock it. Where do you guys buy local or ,,,, maybe you can't?
Thanks MJ.

Can't buy it locally either, MJ. However, you can order it from various sources, e.g., Graf & Sons, Crater Fireworks (Addicted to Blackpowder), etc. If you buy enough, the shipping & Hazmat fees are tolerable, but by no means cheap.

Thanks all. This really sucks. I dô have a BassPro about an hour and a half. I'll have to give them a call.
I guess after that, its online.

Make sure you talk with a Manager type person. From my experience not all employees can sell the real black. So talk to someone in management and make sure they understand what you are looking for not some substitute.

While I have some sources somewhat local, its still more cost effective to order and have a case delivered. My least expensive "local" source is $5/# more than having it shipped to my door (by the case).

:surrender: Why waste your time looking, order 5 lbs from Maine Powder House or Powder Inc. Just that simple and also will cost way less :hatsoff:

I also noticed that the Bass Pro that's about an hour & 1/2 away from me charges 29.99 for BP.
Dang, in the long run its cheaper to order and make up for that with 3 pounds, over 3 lbs you make out.

5# isn't much powder, and even 10# isn't a lot. 1# of ffffg will light off 1100+ charges, and that is about 11# of powder in 70gr charges. If your intend to shoot, and not just hunt, buy a quantity and HAVE it. It won't get less expensive in time, and doesn't deteriorate if stored properly. These days its packed in plastic "cans", so moisture really isn't a concern.

I, too, bought from BassPro (Triple 7 powder) as it was the only place convenient and they charged about $33. But for months they didn't have any 3F which pushed me online. And that was a good thing for a few reasons as I had also been quite interested in trying real black powder but required a more energetic powder (Swiss), but NOBODY had it.

I found that an order of 3 lbs from Grafs of T7 with the HazMat fee about broke even to going to BassPro, but without the concern of wasting time and effort, but also that I could get real black powder, which by then Olde Eynsford had become available, which is much more cost efficient, an American product, and still just as energetic and for a mere $1 more than standard Goex, which by all accounts produces much less fouling in comparison to the standard stuff.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Now I know that buying in quantities online is the way to go.

This is where friends come in handy. You can go together with your friends and order a case and split it. By getting a twenty five lb. case you reduce the Haz Mat fee to about a dollar a lb. The catch is that you have to get together BRFORE you order. Our club can "resell" to members who are members when we order , but can't sell to new members until after we place another order. Even if the cans are already on the shelf. It is the timing that makes the difference. :idunno: :idunno:

Buddies in WNY order from PowderInc. Not sure if they can purchase locally. I'm currently living in NC and use PowderInc. Could purchase locally in NC, but at nearly $9 a pound premium when compared to a 10 pound purchase from PowderInc the decision is easy. Would love to support the local guy, but on a 10 pound purchase I could basically save enough to get 4 pounds of Goex free. In reality, I use Swiss, and that is not available locally.

It's to bad local dealers don't stock. I guess there is just not enough of us around to make it worth there wild.
