My son took Machine Trades in high school. He took in the barrel of an old Remington Model 8 rifle to clean up the threads. His teacher asked him what it was and he said "a high pressure gas pipe". The teacher who is a country boy picked it up and looked through it saw the rifling and said "high pressure gas pipe my a$$" and walked away.

I have NEVER had a problem shipping through UPS. Usually, I take it to a local hardware store which is a UPS pick up point. I'd have to drive 25 miles away to go to the UPS office/distribution center. It probably costs me more, but like I said, I don't have to drive 50 miles just to ship out the gun. I also know the UPS drivers that pick the packages up.

I have had one damage claim problem, but I didn't have to fool with it. I ordered a barrel from Rice, and he sent it out. Well, it never showed up. He said he'd take care of it, and just sent me a new barrel. He told me that UPS simply lost it. Had no idea where it was. A few weeks later, he told me that they had found the barrel and it had been bent over almost double! They paid the claim, though, no problem.

I suspect the easiest way would be to call for a pick up. When you call UPS, you are calling a central office, and if they have any questions, SURELY there will be someone there who will know what to do. I haven't done it in a while, but you will have to know the weight of the item plus the total size of the package in EVERY dimension. It's a bit cheaper to send to a commercial address than a home address, so if you can send to someone's workplace, it will help a bit.

I personally wouldn't DREAM of sending anything like this through the post office. I've been told it can take YEARS for them to come through on a damage/loss claim.

Just don't tell them what it is. They don't need to know what you are shipping.
IMHO that box from TOTW for $20 is the best muzzeloading box every made.
Have them send you one, put your rifle in it and send it any where in the USA you want.
I would even pay to have it sent back to me once the rifle is delivered.

just 2 hours ago I walked in the local post office, set the package on the counter and told them it is a muzzleloader, it is on its way to kentucky. I don't think it is a good idea to be disshonest about whats in the package. I gave up on ups and will not ship anything with them unless I have to. flinch

If I send any gun parts through the Post Office and they ask what it is, I tell them It is machined parts.

I just shipped a BP pistol a few minutes ago at the local P.O. I was asked if there was anything perishable, fragile, or hazardous. I answered no, got insurance on it, and off it goes to another Forum member in Tenn.

Oddly enough, I shipped a .45 ACP through UPS and had more trouble sending a .50 cal flintlock through them. It totally depends upon which clerk is standing behind the counter at a given moment.
