Hello. My apologies if this is inappropriate. Trying to determine if I can ship this directly to a buyer, or do I have to do the FFL thing, given it is now a cartridge gun (albeit a former civil war era gun). Looking for inputs from experts here. If inappropriate, my apologies.

If it's made before 1898, it's an antique. No FFL required.
 
unless your state has additional laws, it should be fine to mail directly. There are even some early smokeless guns, like lebels and the first Schmidt Rubin rifles that qualify.
 
Build a nice plywood case to ship it in. If it’s just in a cardboard box, it may get broken. Accidentally or on purpose.
 
Michigan requires an FFL for anything that can be converted with readily available kit or it is already modified. Check the laws of the state you're shipping it to.
 
Yes, I’m not sure , but I think the ATF came out with some new interpretations on antique and modern. According to their rules, an antique PINFIRE shotgun can’t be sawn off now below 18”. Cover your butt….
