I have said before many times when an ol fools belittles a guy for asking a simple and very good question and suggested they use google and not ask a question that has been asked 100 times before. I say asking here IS ONLINE RESEARCH and I would take the real-life answers of my "friends" here over a guru on google any ol day. AND, each time the question is asked AGAIN there is a great opportunity
Well then, what's the answer to his question?
He didn't say what kind of rain, he didn't say he does have a cows knee, he didn't tell us what powder/or patch he's using.
So, Oo, wise one,
Are flintlocks reliable in the rain?

Or his wife. Pray for his wife.
With any luck the poor saint fled long ago.

Yes. (?)
With actual intent.
Is there some confusion?
No, no confusion. You are miserable @#$&, and I'm sorry I wasted my time and energy even replying to you. Go and read your thesaurus and be a keyboard commando all you want. And while you are at it, do the world a favor pull your lower lip over your head and swallow.

No wife, she died, so did the dog ,,, the Cat does bite me, but only when I feed him.
Necci, i sincerely apologize for the reference to your wife. my deepest condolence.
i violated one of the rules i try to live by. Leave wives and kids out of it.
sorry also about your dog.
I really wish you would temper your attitude a little though. I have read some of your true advice and it was grand. you are slowly alienating many here. damn shame.

Friend, it either rains or it doesn't.
In our past, it rained or it didn't,,
So "blame game?" How did people, 400yrs ago, not shoot game for food?
It's pretty simple, want food? care for the gun while in the rain,
want to shoot target and eat a can of spam? don't care for the gun
It's history, within all voyageur, pork eater or havernat?
Your choice, same as theirs,,

I'm sorry, I guess I just couldn't/can't get that our history has been lost that far. I never got a flintlock without learning about it first,,
You've got history here, I presumed you knew how,??

As has been pointed out by Flint1 and Smo, - it is the black powder fouling that soaks up moisture, and gunks up. And finely made flintlock can be near waterproof; some of the old flint duelling pistols would fire after being fully immersed in a bucket of water! But their pan and frizzen were finely fitted. Not many locks like that around today. More likely the wind will blow powder out of the pan.
George Washington had to surrender to the French and Indians at Fort Necessity, because the rain fell so heavily that the Virginians' powder and muskets were useless. ( Not so, the F&I, who stayed in the cover of the woods.)
So, will a flintlock fire in the rain? Maybe. You can put the odds in your favor, but there are no guarantees. For some of us, that is part of the allure. For others, it's a reason to go with a caplock... or an inline...or....

Well said.

Is it your intent to Insult my Wife?!!!!!
I will certainly insult you, but I never went after yours, or anyone else's family!
But you still insult and belittle new members and others that asks honest questions.

There is no excuse for your actions. So please stop trying to rationalize it.

You add nothing useful to the forum when doing so. The only thing it does is fuel animosity.

You know, it really is easy to be nice to people.

So give it a rest, Scooter.

During Washingtons assault on Trenton, there was a terrible Nor'wester going thru! Driving rain and snow. People today do not quite understand how his troops fired their flintlocks, or had the cannons go off with such regularity! To this day, no one can quite explain how this occurred! I can only guess that his people knew how to make it happen!

Good post, D. Summers.

But we also do not know how many misfires they might have had. History only tells us what some people that wrote it wants us to know. We do not know what may have been omitted. There is no way to verify it now.

With history, one can read up on one subject from several different sources and get several different opinions on that same subject.

I do not believe for one second that there was not misfires from any sort of muzzleloader during battles when conducted under rainy conditions. The one thing they did have to their advantage was that after the first shot, all the others was done quickly afterwards. In other words, the powder was not in the rifles for very long.

This is one reason why I believe it can be conducive to ask questions from people that’s into the game now. History is good and there is much to be learned from it. But there are other ways to learn as well.
