Hello, Got a new stainless 45 LRH barrel from Green Mountain last fall and finally got around to shooting it. I am new to 45s, and have shot a few 50s and 54s over the years. Anyways, went back to shooting ffg blackpowder and figured I would swab the bore after first two shots. Those 2 by the way were quite close and not far off zero at 50 yards so kind of happy at first:)

So long story short there is now a jag with mess up threads lodged in breech.....I have since tried to shoot it out with a few grains of powder under nipple to no avail. I need to box it up and get it shipped to a reputable smith who can pull the breech plug and remove it. Then I need to get a better fitting jag and patch to avoid this happening again.

So, any advice on a good smith who can pull that plug? Thank you

If it was mine I would try putting more powder under the nipple.

There is a hole that connects the bottom of the nipple with the breech. If you use a paper clip or piece of wire to slowly work the powder thru that hole you should be able to get 5-10 grains of powder into the gun.

That much powder will definitely blow your stuck swab out unless you used a bristled brush. The only problem is a 10 grain powder load can produce some lethal velocities.

The next time you get a jag and patch stuck, pour about a teaspoon of water down the bore. Wait about half a minute for the water to soak in and the whole thing will pull out without a problem.

If you did use a bristled brush go to a hardware store and look for a piece of tubing that is longer than your barrel. It must be slightly smaller than the bore size and the thinner the walls, the better.

You can drive this tube down over the bristles of the brush and then it's easy to pull everything out.
The hardest part of this is finding the piece of tubing.

I agree as long as he can get the jag down to the patent breach. I second having it pointed in a safe direction. Pulling the nipple will work if the clean out screw is stubborn. Good luck!

Tried shooting it out about 8 times. For some reason the gas is escaping around the jag and I cannot get it to fire out. I have cleaned barrel well and pulled nipple and soaked that area with oil. Will contact the smith referenced and get this fixed up.

Frustrating but will learn and move on. Thanks for all the info.

I have heard of pouring melted wax down the barrel so that a airtight clog/seal results. And then shooting it out with a small amount of powder. In this way the gasses cannot escape by going around the jag.

I have never tried this myself.

EDIT: The place I 'heard' about it was on reading on the internet somewhere (maybe this forum, maybe not). A long Google search should find where the person who successfully did this, wrote about it.

I have some aerosol "Dry Lube" which is basically a silicon based lubricant, it is really slick.

A person might be able either spray it through the nipple hole or down the barrel and pull the stuck object.

Not sure that I would spray it into the barrel and then try shooting the object out, I have a feeling the spray has a very low flash.
