Bunny hideyhole

Cabin my family built
It was a beautiful day, wind blowing a little, snow was deep, and powdery, tough goin'. No bunnies.

Well, speaking of cervid pellets, one year I filled a five-gallon bucket with elk droppings collected off the snow, just like those moose pellets, and put about four cups under each of the tomatoes I planted the following spring. I have never had a finer crop of toms than I got that year.
Made for an interesting conversation when having friends over for BLTs ...

I've tried that a couple times but always end up eating them before I get home. :shocked2:

Mike, what are the tracks in the secon pic?

Snow bunny on top of the crust.
Man! that was hard walking! Lots of places I sunk down to middle calf, then had to lift the snowshow out of the deep snow. Tough goin'!

Bill, we don't have it anymore. My uncle Stan lost everything in the lawn lake flood, he had four shops in Estes Park, so they sold it to get him back on his feet.
But they wouldn't let us kids buy it!! Still don't know why, we wanted to all pitch in together.
Spent the happiest summers of my childhood there. :shake:

No kidding! Sounds like you weren't getting enough "float" for whatever reason.

Even sinking in calf-deep, it can be deceptive. The snow can be lots deeper beneath you. It only took one fall sideways off snowshoes to teach me that lesson. Went to stand up, and it seemed bottomless. Finally took off the shoes and I was nearly shoulder deep in snow. Had to kind of wrestle the hole larger, then use the shoes to pound a ramp out of it. With the shoes back on, I got out of the hole and walked a lot more careful after that. Then went home and dug out my ski poles. No probs since, long as I keep the pointy end of my body uppermost.

No float? Maybe it's my lard a$$!!
For the first time on snowshoes in many years, I didn't do too bad. I sure was sore the next day. Going back up soon, it's just a lot of fun. Maybe get the wife to go!!??
You can't see it very well, but that bunny hidey-hole is an old mine shaft. The first time I went up there, I saw the hare make a dive into that. Amazing how he can get out, the pic is blurry, but there are his tracks going in and out. :surrender:

That was pretty cool to see the hidey hole. Around here they're hiding in draped brush and grass about 99% of the time, probably due to the lack of holes. That's more like cottontail behavior I used to see when we ran them with beagles in the lower 48. New lessons about snowshoe hares.... Gotta love it! :hatsoff:

What gun are you carrying when after them s'no bunnies Mike?

Been wanted to do some of that myself. Can a guy use a .54 or .58, or is that too much gun? They are the only two ML rifles I own, and my new smoothbore won't be here until early summer.

Capper, that's for sure! I hit a snowshoe with my .50 and a deer load once with the shot going low. Picked him up by one foot and held at eye level and his ears touched the ground. Naw, he was not big, just a bit stretched by the .50! :shocked2:

What's with the new Avatar?

I use 50, 54, 58 and 62 cal a lot, even though I also own 32 and 36 cals. Use reduced loads and make head shots, and you'll get lots more field time with the gun than you ever manage during big game season. And that pays in spades come next big game season!

Do you like it?

Yeah, it's real nice! Did you take a pic to make it or was it something you found and sized.

I keep thinking about making an avatar for this forum but just never get around to it.
