The folks around here train their dogs to be fighting dogs then they expect some little puppy leash to hold them back or when they lose a fight they turn them loose.

Most people who train their dogs to be mean are drug dealers and they seem to like pit bulls or a mix with pit bull. There was a dealer living down over the hill who had an aggressive pit bull. There were several instances of it threatening neighbors on their porch or not letting them out of their house. I drove it off my land never to return with an BB gun and the backup of my 2 dogs. My nearest neighbor resolved the issue with a 20 gauge (the dog, not the dealer) when it wouldn't let him off his front steps.

Before anyone accuses me of hating dogs based on the above I would like to say that my wife and I have had several dogs all of which have been trained in obedience, rally and agility and our 2 current dogs are also AKC and Therapy Dogs International certified and we work in nursing homes and schools on a regular basis.

Training dogs to be aggressive was going on long before drug dealers. I lived for a piece in the hills of North Carolina. My 1st stepfather's dad was an old moonshiner. He would pay a young American of African descent to throw rocks at, and beat, it, when it was a pup. Then, when it was older, the dog was then chained at his still.

I wouldn't be surprised if the practice is still in use today.

Well for whatever reason the dogs around here are vicious and i am not going to deal with it with less lethal means anymore.

I'll throw out two things since they've happened around the Austin area in recent years. Shooting dogs can be a prison experience in many jurisdictions under animal cruelty laws and you can bet there are enough liberals around most anyplace to sic the news media on people who are mean to little "Fluffy"...whether Fluffy can chew chains or not. The second happened some years ago when man shot dog and dog's man shot other man...some folks get bizarro about things like that. You night get what amounts to prior approval from the local LEOs, although that won't protect you from an attorney with too much free time! Just my two cents.

I'd want pepper spray as well as a pistol. It gives you more options, and one that can diffuse the situation without so much potential trouble.

The cops have told me to kill it whether that is stabbing it ,like I did last year, beating it to death, or shooting it. In Indiana if it is to prevent bodily harm or death you can use deadly force against the attacker (human or otherwise)without being prosecuted or sued by the attacker or attackers family or in my case the owner.

Dang it Cynthia even though I wouldn't carry a colt .31 for dogs you got me wanting one now that you brought it up

That may be so, but I'd prefer to spend my afternoon doing something I like rather than explaining things to the cops for a while. And the owner will likely not like that you shot his dog, and may want revenge or cause problems for you or your family in other ways.

By all means do what you need to do to stay safe, but I feel a little pepper spray can make things easier for you in the long run.

And you may want to consider a Remington 1863 Pocket .31 or a Colt 1862 Pocket Navy/Police .36 cal.

Its funny you should mention the owner getting revenge because when I was first talking to the police I said " I hope I didn't pi$$ off the owner" the cop said "why" I told him "when you talk to him you will understand". the current problem dogs owner is a mma cage fighting guy who could kick my butt up and down the street :shocked2:

I learned how to kick a dogs ass back when I was a kid. They really are easy and do not require deadly force unless there are 2 or more of them, but a single dog is deadmeat against any human who knows their fighting style and weaknesses.
It is very easy to knock the wind out of a dog. Kick them in the ribs surrounding the chest when they lunge.
If they come at you, you do not try and dodge out, you go right into the attack and try and grab their tonsils. THey hate that one and are not equipped mentally for something that goes into their mouth willingly. It likely will net a trip to the first aid kit, but that dog will think twice about round 2.
If it is male dog...yep, we all know his vulnerability...same as you fellas have. :shocked2:
Think about eating the dog when you are trying to hit or kick it. Dogs are predators and recognize "I want to eat you body language." If it starts to think you have no fear of it and are actually hunting it, the dog will head for the hills.

You really only need to resort to deadly force with multiple dogs. Even large dogs are cowards at heart and will not stand and fight a human who is not reacting 'normal'. Normal is fear and attempts at escape and damage minamalization. Act like a predator, not prey.
If there is more than one dog, then shoot and do not hesitate. In numbers the dog is mighty, where as alone they are highly vulnerable.

What you say about single dogs is true but if the dog has been trained as an attack dog by some idiot, all bets are off.

Untrained, an aggressive dog will back off if you develop a "kill" attitude and can maintain it.

Among other things this attitude you are displaying requires staring directly into the dogs eyes while every bit of you has to be set to spring at it. Your concentration must be absolute.

There can be no wavering of your thoughts or any mental distractions as they can sense it. If they do sense it they will sometimes attack or at least stand their ground waiting for your next move.

When faced by someone with this mind-frame they will back off.

This does not apply if the dog is with its owner and is protecting him/her. Under this condition the dog will often be willing to fight to the death.

I agree with a single dog and an alpha male attitude I have been able to get several to back down....but the last 4 or 5 run ins with a dog have been 2 or more dogs :(

Either carry bear mace and/or a smal leather strap and get good at snapping them on the nose. Bear mace has a higher capsicum ratio and a freind in MT used it on a car theif. It literally burned his retnas so the theif is permanatly blind. It also works gangbusters on grizzly's. once they're blind if they havent run off pretty simple to slit a throat
