Sperm Oil?

Sperm oil and Jojoba oil are more like a liquid wax than a oil.

Good post and informative link.
The sperm wax/oil is resistant to high temps. Seems like a good possible for patch lubes. Thus far my beeswax/whale (not sperm) oil mix is doing well for me. But the supply will run out one day and a replacement will be needed.

Then at least I be able to say I used the stuff and it was either as good as the old timers said it was or it’s time came and went and xyz is every bit as good.

It I did not care about old things I’d shoot a chassis rifle at 1000 yards instead of keeping history alive.

Unless you somehow got hold of some recently made and (and naughtily) brought into the country ..., you still wouldn't know. They were using fresh stuff, not stuff that was 50 years vintage and/or oxidized, eh? But you do have a point.

Even if you found some...then what? Let's say it was the best stuff ever and turned your gun into a tack driver....Eventually that bottle is going to run dry and you're right back where you started.

Geez, a man with insight and forward thought.

Rare these days,

Well, you got me there, can't argue with keeping history alive......Let the search continue.... :hatsoff:

Even if whale oil is as good as the old timers said, if you could find/test some, any information you gained would be orphan data (interesting but ultimately useless).

The Old Timers had a very high opinion of Bear oil & grease for guns/shooting. Why not try something that is available and not potentially illegal to obtain...?

Shooting BP is ultimately a useless hobby, but it’s rather an interesting pass time. I never said I don’t use bear grease, or mink oil, or 15 other snake oil mixtures, to me a huge allure of BP is the experimentation and exploration of history and historical things.

I wouldn't call it a "useless hobby"

One can learn a treasure trove of useful skills and information if they are willing.

You can learn woodworking machining, metallurgy, blacksmithing , casting, chemistry, math, science, mathematics, astronomy, and more......All can be tied to muzzleloading.

It is a history lesson come to life, has allowed me to learn new skills and puts meat in my freezer. Perhaps useless to you, but not to me...

What hobby isn’t useless? Golf, skiing, hot rods, ball room dancing, home brewing, baking and food channel foodie stuff? I build ship models too.
You don’t need to be a ml shooter to be a history nerd, you can back pack and not go hc. However it brings joy, fellowshipp and fun. A chance to explore history and skills and a feeling of accomplishment as you learn a new skill.

Hobbies aren't useless...... :cursing: :slap:

But arguing might be.... :haha:

arguing IS a hobby to some. One of my best pals in HS would walk into debate class and go at the teacher for 50 min for an entire semester. There were no handouts, no homework, no tests. It was awesome. And the guy, a chubby Korean kid, could argue one side of an issue and tear up the teacher and the next day argue the other side and tear him up again! I honestly think if we could get him in front of Mueller for 10 min the poor ol guy wouldnt know who did what or what he thought about it and would fade away quickly! This kid was to arguing what Michael Jordan is to basketball. Sadly he likes art and food so he is a caterer of weird dishes somewhere in the windy city :idunno:

Back on topic, for double yer $$ the resource I sent will make a platnum nipple that will last many many moons.

I was gonna tap out my cylinder too till Mr. Zonnie warned me....Thanks Jim!

I would argue your point :rotf:

OK. Looked up some of the history of Tranny fluids. Sperm Whale oil was added to auto trans fluid as a friction modifier. but cars of the early 1970's ran at temperatures too hot for the whale oil. It broke down under such heat. So in the early 1970's new auto transmission fluids were developed, hence type A, Type F and Dexron. In my early days of watching the slug gun matches at Blue Ridge near Shartlesville, PA, they did use old fashioned ATF. Type f had not even been developed yet. It might be the choice now, but did not exist when I first went to watch in the late 1960's and to the mid 1970's. My first car with an auto transmission was a 1970 Mercury Montego. My next car was a 1976 model and the transmission fluid I used in the 1970 was "not to be used" in the 1976 model. And researching this to confirm my memory of Tans fluids, just made me feel like a dinosaur.

OK just so I'm clear. Knowing that the orbital period of Mars is 687 days relates to black powder shooting, but wanting to experiment with a historically accurate component of muzzle loading is just a waste of time?
