I use both pre-cut round and square patches, about 1 1/4" diameter for .50 caliber. They are probably larger than patches cut at the muzzle, and this gives more lubed patch to clean the bore as you shoot. I doubt there is any difference in accuracy in any of them, just better bore cleaning.

I have started to use square patches, OX-YOKE isn't making any round 50 cal patches in .020 until the fall.
What's up with that???
The only patching material that TOTW has are the strips.
They seem to work fine.

Use square patches for the target on the left and round ones for the target on the right. :kid:

Have been using round precut patches but after reading some of your posts, I'm going to try cutting at the muzzle next time at the range.

Historically speaking, wasn't it: round patches for shooting believers and square patches for infidels? :)

I didn't think the "Puckle Gun" used patches, but I've never read enough anywhere about it to know for sure? I wonder if they also greased the square patches and bullets with grease rendered from pig fat...? Now all this talking about squares and pig fat is making me want some "scrapple"!

Well, at least I didn't mention head cheese, souse, or liver puddin'. All of which I ate as a young child, and obviously didn't know what went into the stuff.:shocking:

Any body ready to "call dinosaurs" yet?

From one old dinosaur to another...what's the problem with head cheese? Grandma used to make the best!

By the way, I also grew up with a taste for Rocky Mountain Oysters. Had my first sample of them when I was about 4 or 5. MMMmmmmmm good!

Hmmm... Scrapple chilled and punched to bore diameter with a thickness of about 1/5" and used as overpowder wad might just keep the fouling down..umm in flintlocks!
There! I stayed on topic.
I'll be back stateside in a few weeks (Del. county PA). Gots ta git me some scrapple and horse radish and apple butter and use it for off topic purposes. :: Darnitt, now I'm hungry.
