I'm looking for a new vice so I did a search on this forum and read most of the topics about vices.

It seems that a lot of people will use two vices. One that is a "normal" vice and sometimes one of the fancy dual-axis vices. Such as the Versitile Vise.

I also found a mention of this Guitar Repair Vise.

Any opinions on whether the Versatile or the Guitar vice is more useful/works better?

I have a plain no axis wood vice now. I got frustrated with it a while back when I was filing a buttplate because it was hard to get a good angle that was comfortable.

Check out the Wood River Patternmakers/Gunstock vise on the Woodcraft website. I file the butt plate after it is fitted to the butt.

for whatever it's worth, I have long contemplated the purchase of a new vise... although my wife says I have enough vices, I want a pattern makers vise, but the confluence of available money and motivation has no yet happened. after that, it's a toss up between the guitar vise and the versatile vise, with an edge to the guitar vise. by the way, there is a tweak to the versatile vise which is said to make it much more useful.

free advise: well worth the cost!

I bought what you call a "Versatile Vise" and the first one sent wouldn't clamp because of the slop between the screw and nut....sent it back and they sent another. The replacement is a little better but takes 3 turns of the handle to start the jaw moving. This vise is of poor quality and although I still have it, only very light duty work is done in it. The tilting parts have thumb screws....had to install bolts so a wrench could be used. Definitely wouldn't buy this vise again......Fred

Hmm, thanks for pointing out the Gunstock vice. I'm looking at side by side pictures with the guitar vice and I see these differences:
  • A different handle and possibly smoother cranking on the guitar vice
  • .55 cents price difference after shipping and taxes are added to both places
  • Red / Green paint lol

Anyone else spot/know other differences?

looks to be made by same vendor. but...specs are slightly different. Both open to 6", carving vice does not give weight or if with bearings. If the weight was the same I would say toss up.

Hey look at the Wood River universal vice at the bottom of that same page. Simonthecat's posting
