Uh, he's not shooting at the bucket being held by a moving horseman. Please take another look. Alan Rickman fires a revolver shot to tell the horseman to stop and drop the bucket. 'Quigley' then shoots it a couple of times...

Still, an impossible shot with a Sharps rifle at that distance, not even considering the shooter was just standing, with no brace of any kind. Impossible shot.

The Sharps could do it easy. Offhand prolly not.
You're right. Also, at the very end of the film where Quig shoots Richman; the shots come TOO fast for a percussion revolver. They also didn't do a closer movie shot there to see what was goin' on in Quig's hands. Many wish there had been a sequel where he's maybe having adventures with the cute girlfriend in the American West. Would've been a great movie.

Loved the movie Quigley -Down Under but wondering how far the long shot was at hitting the water bucket the horseman was holding while galloping away.
That water bucket was a moving target many hundreds away that only would have been possible in the movies. Still enjoyed the movie and magic shots made with the Sharp Rifle .
It sold a bunch of Sharps rifles

I mentioned this before in a post some time back but don't know if all of you have seen it but Clint Eastwood was going to blow up a bridge in a civil war movie. He had a bundle of dynamite to do the job. The problem is dynamite wasn't invented until after the war. Noble started the Noble Peace Prise because he thought dynamite would be the cause of the end of the world! I wonder what he would think of nuclear bombs?

Has anybody heard what the woman who was killed was set to work on after this film was finished? I heard it on Fox News. I might have it a bit wrong but it shows why a person of Baldwin's character would point a pistol at her while thinking it unloaded an pull the trigger.

So, the movie NEVER establishes the range to the bucket. That's some guy on YouTube doing an estimate based on the time from when the guy picks up the bucket, and then drops it, and an average speed of the horse. In fact IF the YouTube guy was accurate it would be 780 yards, because Quigley walks forward about six feet before he begins shooting...,

IF you get a chance to look at the movie, there is a very quick image from the bucket looking back at the men and you see the puff of smoke. You can see the full height of the bucket and look at the figures in the distance. It's not 780 yards....,

I have a significant amout of experience with long range shooting, 1000 yards, with a high powered rifle and scope. I know bull ---- when I see it.

As do I, and if I can hit 12" target at 600 yards with the coarse peep sight on a modern rifle with government trigger, then a man with a custom long-range hand-load (even if it's black powder), and finely adjustable peep sight and set triggers could do the same at 780 yards...or hit a wooden bucket, in my opinion and experience.

Now Standing Unsupported, that's the BS part, and a first shot at an unknown distance let alone three in a row without sighting shots, that's BS, and in the movie the bucket contrast compared to the surrounding terrain is poor, so he'd need to have probably better than 20/20 vision too, and a more obvious target...so that's BS too.

But from a solid position and no wind, after getting the range right.... oh yeah a sharps could hit that small a target and do it several times.....

Additional factor. Speaking from 30 yrs experience as a full time farrier and certified race track shoer. The recognized recorded speed for a top of the line Thoroughbred Is attributed to Winning Brew @ 43.97 mph. Some Quarter Horse people have claimed 55 mph over 440 yds, 1320 ft, 1/4 mile. Which is the distance they are bred for and why they are called Quarter Horses. ( Detractors of the breed claim it’s because they are 1/4 horse and 3/4 cow ) In any case this is not a proven / recognized record. The average ranch horse isn’t even going to come close. The average horse runs 25 to 30 mph. Compare yourself to Roger Bannister. That certainly do shorten the distance.

In the Davy Crocket movie the bad guy at the shooting match says "put 2 extra thimbles of powder in my rifle" to his buddy like it would help accuracy.
I remember that..., heck that would move his point of aim, and defeat the purpose...,
OF COURSE if he patched with silk, he'd get an extra 40 yards....,

Davy Crockett vs. Bigfoot Mason

Wow the lock-lag on some of the prop rifles makes me cringe...,

That movie, Last of the Mohicans, had a guy using a Silk Patch and claiming it would give an additional 40 yards to his shot, where he got the guy running away in the back. As I get older, I enjoy picking out the movie mistakes but still enjoy the film, which are made for entertainment, not for 'stitch counters'. See News of the World with Tom Hanks. One guy has what appears to be a Henry Yellow Boy, by the modern Henry Rifle Co.; it's supposed to be the 1st Henry or Winchester that had the wood fore-end. But the movie is great, not a "gunny" movie. Hanks gets into a cat-n-mouse fight with 3 baddies; we know he only has 20 ctgs. for his revolver, yet he seems to foolishly throw them away with impossible long shots.

You should go to the "Quigley Shoot" held every June in Forsyth, Montana. The "Bucket" is at 350 yards & is shot off-hand. The other targets are placed out to 800 yards. Sharps, Hi-walls & other Buffalo rifles only. You will get to witness the "impossible" many times over.

This is how BS fake news is spread. Read any report on this: he was handed a gun by the crew who then declared “cold gun” out loud as they do as a safety precaution. The person who handed him the gun will end up taking the heat in this. Baldwin was then told to do a few takes practicing a cross draw and shooting at the camera when the gun went off hitting the two people who are generally directly behind the camera, the cinematographer (hit directly) and director(hit after bullet passed through cinematographer). I’ve seen so many people mad that Baldwin is a lib so he musta have done it on purpose. give it a rest.

I wanted to try the 'extra 40 yards with a silk patch' trick, but I couldn't get my little sister to run out in front of me, LOL!

A known 350 yards is completely different than what "Quigley" did in the movie, and what I was referring to above. Stay focused, my friend.
