I've been using this Transitional .54 riflegun for about 25 years now. Last night sitting in the mist-snow four does walked by (bucks only this year) I put the rifle on them just in case one sprouted antlers and noticed mt brass front sight appeared to be missing, I wiped the ice off the barrel but still not much luck. That evening by the time I walked back to the cabin and peeled off wet gear I noticed the sight was back again. I've come to the conclusion that thin strips of brass shrink in inclimate weather. Or I need glasses.

It really has helped me focus at a local shoot right after I made the new sight I "cut the card" at 25 yards offhand.

To determine the thickness of the front sight that I needed, I took electrical tape and placed it on both sides of the front sight until I could plainly see the sight. Then measured with a micrometer.

"Eyes going south" spoiled my shooting big time. After retinal surgery healed I started shooting with low power reading glasses which allowed a pretty good view of the front sight. Without the glasses I might as well throw a rock. I also paint the front sights according to which color works with which visual environment - white for the deep woods and black for out in the open.

I'm going to tell on myself and you can laugh at me if you wish.
Some years ago I was hunting with a .54 Hatfield mountain rifle, a great shooting gun by the way.
I got the bright idea to tie a feather to my front thimble for a wind indicator, a good idea right? Nope, I was sitting in my stand when this doe comes up on top of a levee, I slowly bring the rifle up to my shoulder a small puff of wind, and the feather lands right on top of the barrel. It was a good day for the deer and a bad one for me..🤣
