What do you guys who make bags use for straps besides leather, I like the looks of the strap used on the leathermans bags, where can I find good strapping material

wally world (sic) has some variety of cotton webbing.
personally, I have been having a blast card weaving my own! good for the brain and soul!
I do a 14 card strap that give me about 1 3/8 to 1 5/8 wide and I get to pick the colors and patterns!

I've used webbing, and I've also made my own from linen and pillow ticking. In the photo section, I have an example of both. The pouch for the Tennessee Rifle has a webbing strap, whereas the pouch for the Smoothbore has a strap made of linen.

Basically, I take a strip of linen of the correct length, and at least twice as wide as I want my strap to be. Then, I fold the edges in towards each other, so that I have both edges together going down the center of the fabric.

Next, I take another piece of linen, or ticking (or you could use another materil of your choice, and I fold it in the same manner, and then lay it on top of the first piece so that the folded edges on each strap are now facing each other.

Then, I simply sew down the edge on each strap with linen thread. You could put leather ends on it if you wish, or even another material, or fold the last inch or so back against itself...

Not hard to do, but it will take a little time (I sew by hand). You can dye the linen in walnut hull dye.....use the dye cold for a mild color, and use it warm for a deeper color...

Anyway, this is just one method, but I like the end result. Although my Tennessee Rifle has a pouch with a webbing strap, I made the strap for the powder horn out of linen and ticking utilizing the method that I just described.

 Thanks a lot Ron, great idea and instructions there, I will try that.

Ps. I live about a zillion miles from a walnut tree, but a while back I found a place on the www someplace that sold ground walnut hulls for dye and ink and now I can't find it, naturally. Know where I could look?

No, and actually, this forum might be the best place to ask about walnut hulls. Someone gave me mine a while back....

ain't nothin like the smell o walnut hulls fermentin,er ,well yes ther is,gotta be experienced,ta be appreciated

You can get crushed walnut hull for brass cartridge case tumble polishing (without polishing rouge might be best) but it is commonly available in reloading sections of stores and online.

With the holidays coming up won't whole walnuts be available in the stores? Just a thought. :hmm:

I've used cotton webbing, woven sashes, and the last one had a hemp webbing strap. I think I found the hemp webbing at a craft store, but can't remember which one.

I believe those are "shells", not hulls, are they not? You don't get color from the hard shell, but rather from the softer outer covering.

Tnx Tx., onliest stuff I found afor is sold by health food stores :shocked2: or basket makers. Good to find a place that understands 'skinners and their strange needs. 'Course, couldn't be stranger than eating the stuff. :rotf:

Yep Claude, lotso folks make that mistake, me included before I got clued in.

Holiday equals soft shell English walnuts, world of difference betwix those and black walnuts, in more ways than color. IOW, one won't be putting a couple of the black walnuts between your palms and cracking the shells.

brett sr, you mention card weaving your own straps, could you point me in the right direction for learning how?

Well dang guys!

I just gotta get off my butt and post pics of my stuff!

IF you guys would edit your bio's and include your emails,I would be happy to forward some files on the how to's of card weaving.
its pretty simple.
wife has her jig saw puzzles for mind and relaxation...I have my straps!

a 72" strap takes me about 3 hours total and cost is about 3.50 for a 14 card sash, using cotton yarn (minimizes stretch)

Thanks Claude, you're right. Hulls not shells.
Sorry guys.
P.S.
Brett Sr. I'd be interested in that card weaving info too.

"Give me what I want..not what I ask for!!"

need your email!

something has changed with thwe profile views, so it might be a short term issue that Claude is dealing with!
