Stuck Jag....

Now the ramrod broke roughly a inch out of the barrel.... Im done for the day....

Okay.... I apologize,,, I am confused.
Is this in addition to a jag stuck deeper in the barrel, or is that the end of the aforementioned stuck jag that is visible in this picture?

If there is still a jag deeper, did it pull off the ramrod, or did the rod break?

Keep in mind that if you add water to the barrel, options to add powder and shoot the jag out will be negated.

I'd go with compressed air or a grease gun myself.

Ran the jag n patch to the bottom of thr bore. Til it stopped. Wouldnt budged after that. Ramrod broke trying to pull it out

If all that is stuck is the part showing beyond the muzzle, try tying some paracord to it with some timber hitches, then tie the other end off to something strong above your head,,, don't leave much cord between jag and tie off point. Pull down using your body weight.

I would just go the grease gun route mentioned on the most recent stuck projectile and barrel offer topics.

I've been there. I had a roached out .45 caplock with a bent and rough bored barrel,,, stuff got stuck all the time. It was my 1st muzzleloader and I had no mentors or access to forums like this. A lot of struggles were had.
Maybe try an air compressor, but beware the projectile you will create. I used this method more than once.

Go the grease route. No projectile,,, and it sounds like the gun could use some extra cleaning anyway.

Pour lube down the barrel to wet the patch and make the bore slick. Clamp barrel in vise. Clamp visegrips on rod and pull. If visegrips slip, sand or file a small notch in the exposed area of ramrod so the visegrips have something to grip behind. Make sure you pull straight back so not to break it off.

I never clean a bore with the wood ramrod!

Stupidly used a 3-piece aluminum cleaning rod that was handy. Just don't do that. They can break/ strip threads. One did. Pulled nipple, dribbled 4F, smashed down to seat obstruction solidly atop what I thought was a small amount of powder and replaced nipple. It worked. Stick to sturdy rods for everything.

I had a similar problem with my flintlock rifle.
I put about 5 grains of powder in the touch hole. Pushed the jag all the way down to the powder. Primed the pan and touched it off.
The jag flew right out.
Make sure your pointed in a safe direction.

Worked for me every time.

@bassncrap, this has already been said, but if you have a bench vise firmly tighten the broken ram rod tip in it then twist and pull the barrel. Use some hot water or spray some oil first as previously described. If you twist and pull it should release.

Simplicity......

Remove the nipple. Pour 5 grains of powder through where the nipple screws in. Replace nipple. Put a cap on the nipple. Point in a safe direction. Cock the hammer. Pull the trigger. Done

So trying to clean the bore of my Fox River Fifty....

I ran a wired bore brush with Hoppe 9 down the bore a few times and decided to run a patch to see what crud was in there.


.50cal Jag on ramrod with thundercloud cleaning patch.... made it to the bottom and thats it... will not come back up.......


Reckon I should have ran that brush bout 10000 more times before running a patch or use a smaller Jag...

I never use a brush on a muzzle loader as they tend to get stuck.

Yep, if it's just not right they can.

All you need is to seal the nipple or vent and then to tip some water in. Put a wet wipe on a jag or loop and get a soppy pumping action going. Tip it out. Pour boiled water in, tip it out repeat. Use a towel because it's gonna get hot. Keep doing it until the breech is to hot to touch.

Now use an easy fitting cotton patch to soak the heavy drops up. The heat will do the rest. Remove nipple if you want and add some tissue type paper under the hammer.
Now pump a nice fitting jag and patch to push the spital out of the flash channel onto the paper.

Once cooled but still warm use a patch lubed in beeswax and olive oil down the barrel. Not got any? Make some.
Still seeing some black? Don't fret, it's just carbon, you have nueatralised the salts that could of done harm.

Well I put the rod in the vise going vertical. Wood dowel on muzzle and started tappin with a hammer on the dowel.

It breaks free!!!!

Except the part of the rod that the jag is screwed into is still in the barrel....


Reckon the grease gun is the next option.

The big upside to all this is that this is a project gun pretty much.

I have my CVA Hawken to shoot in the meantime
